Anyone recall John Linford? 09:27 - Jun 6 with 1493 viewsGeoffSentence

I've just been watching highlights of Town vs AS Roma from 1982 (won 3-1, lost 4-3 on aggregate) and noticed John Linford pop up as sub later on.

I'd never heard of him and after a little bit of research it looks like this was his one an only appearance for Town.

Wondering how he made the bench ahead of more regular reserves like Tommy Parkin, Kevin Steggles, Trevor Putney or Irvine Gernon.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

He was a goal machine in the reserves … the good old combination league.

Yeah - that was a common thing back in the day. Older people might remember Frank Treacy and Robin Turner, who similarly couldn't stop scoring in the Reserves, but seemed to think the goal had been erected in front of the West Stand when it came to the bigger stage.

Is, or was, a pub landlord in Norwich. Usually makes it along to the ex-players' dinner, after the actual dinner and more casually dressed than most. He was chatting with Frans Thijssen and Paul Mason at the last one I was at a couple of years ago as he played with them at clubs in Holland.

Thinking about it more now he was probably going through one of his more prolific scoring periods at the time of the match and being 3-0 down I guess seemed the best option for our one substitute allowed.
I recall it being a torrential night and about the 3rd match I’d ever been to .. standing in the corner of churchman’s that no longer exists near the away fans nowadays.

Ah the classic post playing career path for ex players back in the day. Take on a pub.

I used to like watching John Linford for the reserves back in the day.
I also remember beating him at darts in the centre spot back in the day when the supporter clubs from the region played darts on a monday night. The players also had a team that joined in as well.

It was The Marlboro pub. Used to be my local when I lived in Norwich. Don’t know if he still runs it. He was in there most weeks, seemed a nice enough bloke, tho there were a few ‘geezers’ floating around as well.

Think he had a number over the course of several years. He certainly likes a beer from my experience of him!

So he couldn't hit a double or the back of the net?
Linford was born in Norwich & I think we recruited him from Gorleston, aged 24.
He did make a bit of a career in Europe, scoring 24 goals in 50 games for Fortuna Sittard.
The last player I remember at Town who scored for fun in the reserves was Jonas Axeldal, who failed to find the net in 26 Town first team games, although most of those would thankfully have been from the bench.

I remember that match, we went 2-0 up and it looked good if we could get the next. They did and it sucked all the air out of everybody. At 2-1 we would have needed 3 goals to go through (the curse of away goals) and as it was second half, the game was done. What is more galling is that my colleague (R.I.P) with me that night was Italian, but Ipswich bred. In previous games he had always supported the Town. In this one, when they scored he was suddenly jumping around like a loon. I was pretty amazed (as well as peed off about the goal) as I had no idea he would be supporting Roma that night.
I remember the name John Linford.
Looked him up and found he had some success in top 2 Dutch divisions in a 6 year period , more than 1 goal per 2 matches. So he must have been a decent prospect.

And in his defence, the players he was trying to oust from the first team were more than a bit useful!

You must have forgotten Darren Bent, who was prolific for the Reserves prior to making the jump up to the UEFA Cup whilst still a teenager.
