McAteer and Furlong proving the old adage, 'if you don't shoot, you don't score'. Practically all season we have seemed all too often to turn down decent opportunities to shoot from 20 yards plus. It has frustrated the hell out of me. Whilst I understand the data driven explanation of % chances of scoring from "better quality" chances which drives the constant recycling of the ball around the edge of the box, these two goals show that opportunities can and should be taken.

I'd be interested to see how many goals from outside the box we have scored this season, and how that ranks in the championship. You'd think we'd be up there as I can recall a fair few.

I did look but couldn't find that stat easily.

Agreed. Although I'm not one to shout "shoot" everytime we cross the halfway line, we do seem to squander opportunities to shoot.
For "shoot" also read "cross." Although the number of misses from decent crosses must be up there too.

But also, how often do we successfully get to the by-line and pull it back for a tap in? Neither Clarke or Philogene do that, nor SWE, McAteer should have been doing that but he's either not been playing or not been in form. Burns is the only one who's been capable, and he's obviously not played much.

We're actually also 3rd for most shots inside the six yard box.

So it seems it is less about getting players into those good positions but more about putting them away. We had two last night with Nunez missing from very close range.

Last night I was thinking we should have had a crack from distance 3 or 4 times. Instead, we try and pass it into the net in a crowded box. Frustrating, and the move breaks down. We too often over-elaborate, and when you've got Azon in the box who's more likely to kick the ball against himself than towards the net we might as well have a pop from distance.

McKenna highlighted the exact opposite post-match sometime midseason. IIRC he was lamenting our tendency to take low XG shots/crosses that were easily blocked rather than working the chance and creating higher quality openings.

Although Furlong's was a strike from range, the space and opportunity was only there because it was created by excellent work from Philogene. It was a shot worth taking as the opening was there, when so often against a low block it is not.

Our highest XG chance* falls to Azon precisely because Mehmeti opts not to cross from a decent opportunity, instead waiting for an overlap and playing in Furlong for an even better one.

I personally think the "big chances missed" column against our strikers is the bigger issue here.

*edit: Overlooked the Nunez rebound which probably challenges Azon's for XG

Therefore technically it should be "don't shoot, have a statistically lower chance of scoring but not zero chance."

Appreciate the marketing challenge for this.
