10 reasons Kieran McKenna is staying 10:38 - May 4 with 3952 viewsunstableblue

1) the Prem merry go round is limited - Bournemouth have their new man. Brighton have their man. Brentford have their man. Man U have their man. Spurs will stay up and have their man.
2) Palace is now a lesser draw than Town - their off field set-up and training ground no longer far superior. But now their poor ground starts to look way behind PR.
3) the new training ground is coming on line in the autumn, as designed by Kieran (in part) with the training pitches and PR pitches now at a elite level to match. And the academy and U21s reaching Prem level as well.
4) our off field technical, recruitment and player care teams are a completely different level now than last time, as per Kieran’s own comments
5) his wages go back up to the premier league contracted level, which is is top 5 area
6) he’s made commitments to players like OShea, Sindre, Mehmeti, Jaden to come here and prosper under him
7) he’s going to get a serious transfer war chest again - and the club is now more attractive to draw players in, with the £6m profit in the Prem incentivising the ownership to invest heavier, with the expanded investment they have
8) he gets to have another go at the premier league in an environment that has patience
9) he’s only 40, he can further hone his skills here, and then mirror Robson as a launch pad to great things… but when he is ready. The Man U and Spurs job cycle is now a few seasons away as well
10) his family are settled locally, he gets Suffolk, Ipswich and the club — and man he loves those Aldeburgh fish and chips

Super Kieran McKenna - now above Burley in the statue queue -
Long may he reign!!

Palace are a lesser draw? Just because Selhurst Park is a throwback? They appear as established Premier League club who might win a European competition this season. We're still a way off that.

12. Whilst his EFL record is one of the best of any manager, his Prem record reads 1 season, 1 relegation. That's not really going to entice too many established Prem teams, so his options would be best to9 stay put rather than the risk of a poor Prem team elsewhere where he has no credit in the bank.

I don’t disagree with any of that but I suspect with benefit of hindsight the great man may wish he’d taken the Brighton job after all.

If a similar opportunity came calling (maybe Palace, maybe another) I think he’d have a really difficult decision to make.

Also, don’t have kids myself yet but am led to believe it’s reasonably easy for kids that age to move school without too much disruption.

I obviously hope he stays here forever but if he moves on we should build a statue. What a guy.

The fact you have to call it a European competition rather than using its actually name undermines your point and shows what a non entity of a cup it is.

In a world where Liam Rosenior can manage Chelsea, anything is possible!

We're celebrating finishing second in the second tier for the second time in three seasons. I'd take Palace's position right now, including a potential Conference League trophy.

I think your point 8 about patience might be the most persuasive, and to expand on that KMck will not want a second failure in the Premier League, but where does he have the best shot of keeping a side up? The better squads of the mid table established clubs has to be set against the patience that he will be afforded by club owners and fans of whichever club he goes to. Time and again we have seen this season that even excellent managers with proven track records are not being afforded enough time to start from scratch with ideas / philosophy. Think Postecoglu, Frank, Potter, Maresca etc. That means he has to join a club which already plays in his style, but as you say below, most of them have managers now. I almost think there would be a bigger chance of him jumping ship to Spurs if they get relegated! He'll get time then, as Spurs will win plenty of games in the Championship.

As a father myself, I can tell you that the biggest problem that Kieran is likely to face is that his son already has a Town shirt. It's going to have enormous psychological implications moving from Suffolk at his impressionable age.

With that in mind, you need to rewrite your list, starting with:

1) His son is an Ipswich fan and has the kit and everything.

IMO you underestimate the ability of clubs to look past the results and recognise how he had a playing with very limited resources, and many players still from the L1 squad.

As a father I agree, if your family is happy that’s huge. Let’s face it money it sounds won’t be an issue.

He could however commute to London quite easily I would imagine. His kids in Ipswich schools must be kings or queens of the hill. Dad is an Ipswich Town legend, could you imagine ?

He is so young he could stay here for a decade and still have a multi decade career in the top six.

The only Muff in Town.

Half his family and a good percentage of Enniskillen and Ballinamallard also seem to now support Town as well. You venture into Enniskillen of a weekend and you have a very high chance of bumping onto kids wearing Town shirts.

Is a beautiful sight for a Suffolk man

George not only got us promoted, but he also delivered European football. For me, Kieran needs to achieve as a minimum PL survival before he goes above George in the statue list. Still has a bit to prove at that level.

I can't see who he would leave for right now.

There's a finite number of clubs he would leave for at any moment, and us going up reduces that. Had we not I think he would've gone to a premier league job, but now I can't think who he leaves for.

Spurs would've been an obvious one, and probably something he couldn't turn down, but they've made a good appointment in De Zerbi. That probably just leaves Palace, they'll certainly have him on a list but a) he would be expensive to get and b) I'm not sure he would leave for that right now. Celtic? Maybe, big club, but its a pants league and they've got no hope of success in Europe. Would you trade the premier league in a club where you have a high level of job security for Kilmarnock away? I can't see it.

I think he stays.

Though McKenna managed to get us back up after suffering relegation. I wonder what would have happened had the club held it's nerve after Grimsby away?

Looking at footage of the 2000/1 season, it looks almost innocent compared to today’s version. Burley, love the man, been here as player , manager and resident all my Town supporting life, but no just promoted team will have that chance again. Us, Cov and whoever, will be seen as fodder to all other teams.

Just compare the club's finances in the Sheepy era to the club's in the post Evans era. Given time McKenna might take us to 5th in the prem not 19th win 11 home games not 1 and when he does get relegated again it be by just 4 points not 14. Until then the only thing he's done better than George is finish second in the championship.

Never forget that on 7th. April 2021, for ITFC, the Game Changed.

Finished second in the Championship in two seasons. Burley couldn't manage a top two appearance in five consecutive ones, when we were one of the bigger teams in the division, rather than coming up from League One.

It was a very different era, though. The football pyramid was far more competitive than it is now. Sunderland finished seventh in 1999/2000, straight after promotion to the top flight. Blackburn finished tenth under the same circumstances in 2001/2002, whilst Fulham comfortably survived. Our fifth place finish masked Charlton claiming ninth.
