Crucial points from very late goals 16:13 - May 4 with 1262 viewssohamblue74

Noticed the sky sports stats in the second half of the Saints vs Towen match.
Not too surprised that we are top of the ratings for scoring very late goals after 75+ minutes.

Got me thinking. We only lost 8 league matches all season. Only 3 since new year.
These 4 very late equalisers were absolutely crucial in getting us up to 84 points.

Hirst vs Brum away 1 1
Clarke vs Derby home 2 2
Egeli vs Blackburn away 1 1
Clarke vs Preston home 1 1

Not sure how many points went the other way due to very late goals against.
Stoke away injury time equaliser springs to mind.

Anyway, those 4 points were crucial even if we were (at the time) frustrated not to win vs Derby, Preston or to play better vs Brum, Blackburn.

Lol. Were all 4 late goals pens too?

The late equaliser against Boro was even more vital as it knocked them out of the running when they could have been well in it if they had won.

Clarke against Boro and Southampton as well - in a strange quirk both of those goals came in the 87th minute.

All felt like fairly poor results at the time as none of them were winners but they actually were crucial in the end. Sounds daft but the super power this year was not losing many games as much as anything.

As Hull got in, I think our only loss in the top 6 was Boro away.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Id suggest the point gained at Saints was pretty crucial considering it was condidered by many to be "of no use to either team"

Haven't done the maths but I suspect we 'won' the top 6 mini league.

It was, and to emphasise just how crazy the season was, we managed to lose 3 against the bottom 6 and drew 3 more. If you exclude Sheff W and put Portsmouth in their place, lost 4! Not your average Championship for more than one reason and I'm very glad to be out of it, for a long time I hope!

Eh? No. We still would've gone up even if we'd lost at Saints.
Those people were right, it was of no use to either team (other than it perhaps gave us confidence/momentum).

All your well made and valid observations aside, I'd like to point out that every point ever secured by any team in any sport during any season throughout all history was crucial in achieving the team's end of season points total.

It didn’t make any difference to where we finished. It gave us confidence going into Saturday though.
