That was yesterday according to Phil, Ashton saying new manager is imminent last week and yet here we are.
You have to wonder if we are waiting for something or SOMEONE ?

Just lawyers doing lawyer things I think. BlueCo are apparently quite difficult to deal with so even if we've agreed terms getting the contracts done on all sides might be taking a while.

Lawyers.. the longer they take the more money they make. You need to understand the legal system in all forms is purely designed to make the legal profession rich, hence they will be sending emails, forms etc and probably charging £500 for each email and the longer they can do that they will.

probably why Im informed my uncles solicitors are charging near £5oo per hour +vat ...then TWO solicitors rock up to speak to me regarding him Probate.. costing almost £1000k per hr ... and there's nothing I can do about it .. as it was his wishes ..Im informed it will cost
£15-20k to do tis probate ... Its obscene ..just helping themselves to his estate , in what is a very simple Will.

It is possible to do probate yourself:

https://www.gov.uk/applying-fo

As for O'Neill, I am reliably informed (by the voices in my head) that he has signed and Ashton was about to add his signature to the contract when Phil rocked up for his exclusive first interview and opened with the cheese question:

'Oh, the very mildest of mild cheddar'

Ashton slammed down his poised pen and summoned Bluey and Crazee to escort O'Neill from the building.

Caveat first,not legally trained

You can bin the solicitors and apply to be administer of the will, there is plenty of online guidance
If the will is straightforward then this could be feasible

£15K seems pricey.

Yes, you can do probate yourself. You can also sort out IHT and submit that if you know what you are doing.

In my view it depends on how complex the estate is, including whether or not a property is involved. In both my father and brother in laws case, complex was the only word to cover it. There’s no way I could have done my father’s thanks to all sorts of problems with the will and the property. The BiLs? Possibly, but the size, way the Will was written and quite frankly unwillingness on my part to do it meant I paid for people to do the work.

Yes Solicitors charge the earth, but in these cases (and two others) I’ve chosen to grin and bear the cost and use them. Friends of mine have DIYd it with various degrees of success and chaos!

Crikey! I thought £6K for a simple will with no IHT issues was obscene.

I did probate myself when my father died. It was simple as everything passed to my Mother. When she died I was one of the beneficiaries and it didn't really feel appropriate to be handling it. Felt more comfortable leaving things in the hands of solicitors to avoid any potential disputes. It cost though!

It is, I got a new will drafted last month by my solicitors and the cost was a suggested donation of £210 to a local hospice charity. Keep an eye out for the month in every year when reputable legal firms encourage those who have not made provision or want to update their will by donating their services in exchange for the client making a charitable donation.

Very surprised it’s not all been announced. Less than two months until we kick off against Sunderland and a lot to do. I’m hoping these deals Ashton mentioned for players will be sorted soon as well.

Last week Phil’s reported the deal would be concluded and possibly announced over the weekend. That’s long gone.

Sorry, I can see now my post was potentially misleading. I actually meant £6K for probate, where there was a simple will in place and there were no IHT issues.- not £6K for a will.

I've known manager deals to drag on a bit due to sorting terms with staff, so that may well be the delay.

Longtimefan's talking about the price to administer an estate, which is very different to the price for making a will (although your advice is very helpful in this regard).

As Churchman and others have said, you don't need to retain a solicitor to administer an estate, particularly if it is fairly straightforward. You can do it online. I did my late uncle's and probably saved the beneficiaries (including me) circa £5000. Be warned though, it does take a considerable amount of time and the online forms are only the start of it. It took me at least 20 hours, probably much more, plus other members of the family dealt with the house sale and furniture clearance etc. That's what you pay a solicitor to do if you don't want to do it yourself.

You could always consider asking a solicitor to help with the more difficult parts of the job. For example, the iht forms and drawing up the estate accounts? Leaving you to deal with the more straightforward aspects, such as applying for probate, closing of bank accounts etc and finalising the utilities and other debts. That should limit the legal fees. But again, you've got to be prepared to put in the time and effort, and it is time-consuming.

I know, I know, I've been through the processes myself for mother and an uncle. And to a lesser extent with my Dad when there was no question about doing it myself, and yet that was the most difficult because I had to spend a whole day going from pillar to post in North London getting documents and seeing people on a very short timescale that solicitors couldn't manage from Ipswich. And that was before the flat clearance which only you and the immediate family can perform successfully as the only ones who can know with certainty what is sentimentally valuable, what has a potential monetary value and what needs to be cleared out.

I understand your pain, but it might help if you're aware that the simplicity of the will itself is largely irrelevant when it comes to probate. It's the size and complexity of the estate itself that will determine how much time needs to be spent on it, and the resultant charge if the beneficiaries want someone else to do it.

We had some trouble with our solicitors during probate resolution for my mother's estate. Everything was shambolic, especially considering the fees charged. Mum was getting threatening letters about unpaid utility bills months after it should have been sorted out, for example.

After my sister-in-law composed a stiffly-worded letter of complaint (with a whiff of ombudsman), they changed the person dealing with the case to an efficient young lady who got the mess sorted out and things progressed fairly smoothly thereafter. Tho the compensation offered was pretty derisory.

Don't be afraid to raise a fuss if things aren't being done properly.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
