Broken Britain? I think we need to do some benchmarking against the U-S-A 23:07 - Jul 2 with 2203 viewsunstableblue

The Russian bot farms, Farage, Robinson, MAGA/Musk/Hegseth, large swathes of client journalism, and no little effort from Labour have everyone screaming ‘Broken Britain’ and ‘Keir Starmer is a w@nker’

But the metrics really aren’t quite reflecting that, nor has our foreign policy, or action on the NHS and wider reform.

And yet over the pond it has gone so baths!t crazy as to become a parody, corruption at a scale never seen in a western power, rule of law under attack, a health care crisis that is now escalating, and a wealth gap that is frightening, and crucially a deficit that is rocketing. All as cost of living increases. A war so disastrous as to now be comical.

But that’s now what Musk, Robinson, Farage, the social media bots and client journalism want us to discuss or focus upon.

I give you the below, utterly bananas! This is where right wing populism will lead us people:

Well done all those who voted for him.
The dirt poor who he hates and has total contempt for while he corrupted rakes in billions.
It's disgusting at all levels.
So many have suffered and so many more will suffer.
Biggest casualties are truth, decency and integrity.
These are very very bad people in charge.
Yet all those of us who warned of it get labelled far left and, even worse, the old false equivalence comparisons with the Democrats are made.

That Stephen Miller for one.

Having him driving policy for the supposed land of the free is pretty damn dystopian.

This America State 250 fair though, what a joke, and perhaps the scales are falling from the eyes of some who voted for him. The Iran War cannot be made to look positive.

I appreciate the sentiment of your post but who on here did you warn not to vote for him? I can only think of two US based posters on here you regularly engage in US politics on here. And of those two, which one labelled you far left and, even worse?

The erosion of truth and decency is almost worse than the blatant corruption. That Trump and his family are scammers and grifters and cheats is not a surprise; the ongoing unwillingness of the mainstream media to probe even slightly beyond the surface is partly why we are where we are.

Just think - pardoning January 6th rioters (many who have gone to receive subsequent sentencing for separate serious offences) and then prosecuting an ex US Olympian for touching some lining that was already coming away due to a bodged and corruptly rewarded and over hyped renovation.

It’s banana republic stuff.

But yeah broken Britain.

I still hold out hope that when Trump dies, the Republican Party can reinvent itself and get rid of all the hate and bile. Shift a little to the middle and we’ll have two parties that are focused on policies and not personalities.

In other news, I’m also hoping for unicorns to fly over my house tomorrow and drop off some bags of gold.

sigh...
It was a general warning against the dangers of his becoming president again
Do you think it was not warranted?
Where have I said a US based poster labelled me as far left?
Though that term does get thrown about on here from time to time
As it was a while ago a number of posters from then have since been banned
There was a lot of debate then re what would happen with quite a bit of "don't worry it will be fine/not that bad" type sentiments
Don't think you were around at the time

I don't know him personally. They may do.
But I suspect the post was more aligned to them being bothered about the terrible state the US finds itself in. Full in inequality and a CiC who was somehow managed to make over $1 billion during his presidency. $1billion.
I would imagine most people would be troubled by that.

This is the problem. We speak into an echo chamber.

This sort of post is a common warning on here from a lot of posters and yet we still get plenty on here decrying it as lib leftyism and still supporting Farage/Lowe et al.

What is the answer?

The same was true with warnings over Brexit that went unheeded by far too many. The one lesson of history is that we never learn the lesson of history.

America obviously has its issues but in general I find it a far more happy, friendly and positive place to live, where people want to see others succeed and enjoy themselves. I think a lot of outside visitors are experiencing that vibe this summer, which is great to see instead of the usual media portrayal.

The lifestyle can better for much of the middle class compared to say the UK, 18% of individuals earn 6 figures and opportunities are vast around the country. The GDP growth since the 2008 is pretty insane whereas Europe basically stagnated. So there is certainly plenty of opportunity.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Benters - there we have it!

You don’t honestly believe that London bashing bullsh!t? Seriously are you that naive?

It’s Putin / Farage / Musk social media nonsense.

You been round Clacton recently? The Town that Farage forgot.

I live and work in London and work in the states all the time.

London far superior on so many levels - transport, healthcare, food, cleanliness, rule of law.

And that’s before you factor in all the utter madness going on there due to Trump.

Let me guess Kier Starmer’s a w@nker?

3 years, although my wages were less in London.

I think half of the thing in terms of lifestyle (in my opinion) is New York is really the only direct comparison with London, where the US obviously has 10-15 major markets were wages are high and cost of living in say Texas metros/Chicago/Atlanta is half of what it is in Manhattan.

I’m not sure on the disparity in terms of London wages and the rest of the UK but it certainly isn’t as pronounced in the US.

This isn’t a country you’d want to live if you were down on your luck though, that’s for sure. Like anywhere there’s good and bad aspects of it and it’s not for everyone. I personally enjoy it and like the people.
