If Hirst does leave, surely we need two more strikers?

I think we need to not get carried away with Akpom.

Yes he’s looked better in pre season however if we can get an upgrade on him in that 3rd striker role then we have to do it.

Nope!

Akpom stays and probably 2 that can play a false 9 in the squad by end of the window.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Encisco and a proper target man should be enough

Yes, but he’s had a much better preseason than anyone expected.

Good enough to warrant a spot in the squad? I’ve no idea

Perhaps I’m reading too much into yesterday but thought it was telling that Hirst didn’t come on and Akpom did.

Pretty sure Hirst will be gone be end of next week. He’s made a big contribution in his time with us but let’s be honest his finishing last season was shocking and he looked very short of confidence passing the ball when in good shooting positions.

Like a few fringe players he needs to play regularly to improve and can’t see that happening with us and can’t see him making a contribution based on last seasons performance, so we still need another striker although Emerson played well yesterday. But it was only a friendly and to be relying on him as our main striker is asking a bit too much.

Akpom to be our third centre forward, behind Emersonn & a new signing who will be our main starting frontman.
Akpom will be a major step up from Al Hamadi as our 3rd striker, not forgetting that he was actually our #2 striker for the first half of our previous PL campaign.

Poll: If we go up, which new striker would you like us to sign?

Let’s be honest it looks like Akpom is going to be 3rd choice. And player trading allows us to make a good profit on Hirst who is in his prime and a very able Championship striker that could help most teams at that level.

Akpom, Hirst and AAH to leave so we need three replacements. A young PL loan would be better than AAH and two more experienced strikers. Our biggest problem last time was not scoring enough goals and we lacked firepower. We don’t have a target man in the mould of Chris Wood or Kieffer Moore which would give us the option to play long if we needed an equaliser

Issue with Akpom is he’s probably hard / expensive to get rid of, whereas Hirst will net a nice profit. I think if the circumstances were reversed it would be Akpom leaving, but they’re not so it looks like he’ll stick around as effectively 3rd in line.

IF we stay up I’d expect it’ll be the likes of Nunes, Mehmeti, Akpom, Furlong, Johnson etc that are most at risk next summer. Obviously depends on who performs well this season and there might be a surprise or 2, but a bit mad to think in 12 months it could be players like Jack Clarke & Greaves, £15m additions, who start to look like the lower end of the squad.

Problem is, unless we are planning to play 2 up top sometimes, it is a hard sell to get someone to come here and be third choice. I think it is likely to be one more experienced striker, Emersonn, then a committee of Akpom, Enciso and Maeda sharing minutes when needed.
