The imminent threat from Russia 16:50 - Sep 3 with 2460 viewsGlasgowBlue

is a NATO fiction to justify their complete capitulation to Trump's demand for more military spending.

So says Diane Abbot.

She also describes the Russian invasion of Ukraine as "The NATO campaign against Russia"

Why on earth has Burnham let this Putin apologist back into the Labour party?

There's a shock.

Maybe she will defect to the Greens.

FFS. At least you know that Farage is picking up a paycheque for looking after Vlad's interests. Her and her old boss Jezza are quite happy to do it for free.

Because he supports her views? If he does, he’s not alone.

There is no NATO campaign against Russia. There never has been. It was never set up for that and still isn’t. It was designed for mutual defence but there’s no point in telling people who disagree, like my sister who is much further left than D Abbott.

I presume Diane Abbot agrees with the Putin view that Ukraine is not a country and has no right to exist as one. I presume she sees Ukraine as aggressors who started the war on Russia, as Putin claims and Trump agrees.

There’s nothing rational to her view unless she believes the last paragraph.

She must be willfully ignoring every noise coming out of Russia, but tbh, I think she's in zone of harmless old mad women now, so being in the party makes no odds and keeps some happy.

lol. Russia can’t even beat Ukraine. NATO would annihilate them as it stands. We need to keep up security measures and have drone defence capability, but we don’t need any additional spend on weapons to be more than capable of defending ourselves. Given the financial challenges I’d certainly not be wasting money that could be better spent elsewhere (which would include improved energy and food security measures that would also reduce the threat from Russia).

Conventional military threat? Relatively unlikely.

Hybrid and cyber-warfare, there is definitely an ongoing situation. Which is what a chunk of the increased military budget is going towards dealing with. Along with updating equipment and approaches in line with the rapidly changing nature of modern warfare (a lot of which has come out of Ukraine).

Plus there is a genuine situation that we can no longer rely on the USA as an umbrella and backup. Europe (not just the EU) is going to have to increase defence expenditure to compensate for that. Which is terrible for badly needed welfare and social programmes. The only advantage being that much of the money will be spent within the continent, rather than buying tech from across the Atlantic.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Russian distrust and dislike of the UK goes back a long way.

The first significant friction came during the Napoleonic Wars, when British attempts to break the Continental System caused friction (mostly at sea) with Russia whose Tsar Alexander, after the Peace of Tilsit, was inclined to be friendly with Napoleon.

Then came tension over Russia's expansion to the south, with threats to the Ottoman Empire and the Bosporus, culminating in the Crimean War. Tho the issues did not go away after its conclusion.

Britain's spread of influence north-west from India clashed with Russia's expansion south-east from the Caspian Sea later in the 19th century, putting them on different sides in a number of disputes. This is where much of the popular antagonism towards the UK originated.

A brief and mild thaw in relations up to the start of the First World War was soon dissipated by events surrounding the Russian Revolution, which saw British forces deployed to fight the Soviets and support the Whites, plus economic, political and espionage pressure applied.

After the forced and mistrustful alliance of WWII came the Cold War, with Britain as a seemingly enthusiatic ally of the USA, including hosting weapons aimed at the Soviet Union.

Now, despite our relative lack of global clout, the present Russian regime (and media, if you watch Steve Rosenberg's digests from Moscow) directs outsized anger in the UK's direction, as an old bugbear.

Steady on. They'll be calling you a Putin apologist.

But I agree we appear to be rushing headlong towards a figure (3.5%) which has been plucked out of the air by Trump. And a percentage of GDP, as opposed to an actual spending figure representing what is needed, seems to me to be intellectually nonsensical.

Indeed, the latest figures indicate that the US only spends 3.2% of GDP on defence, and it has much more of a world role than any European country.

https://www.globalmilitary.net

And let's not forget that in 2025 the 27 members of the European Union spent a combined $430.4bn on defence, 2.7 times Russia's $158.2bn, and that Russia doesn't even seem able to defend itself from drone attacks from Ukraine.

What I think is needed is more co-ordination amongst European nations and an analysis of which areas we are weak in and a strengthening in those areas.

And in many ways our best interests are probably best served by enabling Ukraine to continue taking the fight to Russia, the expense of which seems to be falling on Europe anyway.

Tragically true for thousands of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers. There does not seem to have been any diplomatic overtures from Europe for years now. this war has now outlasted WW1.

But an interesting shift in the case of France who were probably wise to have always had their own, independent nuclear deterrent.

She also previously described the conflict as ‘NATO’s campaign in Russia’. Disgraceful, I suppose Hitler was also a victim of Wrstern aggression?

It’s the kind of sh1t-witted take that cost her and Jezza etc 2 elections.
