Angus Gunn called up to the England squad vs Brazil 21:16 - Nov 11 with 3379 viewsElderGrizzly

The cupboard really is bare isn’t it? Thought Nick Pope might get a chance?

These aren’t real call ups, it’s just simpler to utilise those already on international duty to cover pull outs for a friendly - see also Solanke and Cook.

No bad thing rewarding youngsters in this way

Agree with the sentiment ITFC joe, but the way Nick Pope has played for Burnley he would’ve deserved a call up. That’s not taking anything away from Angus Gunn because he looks very decent.

The young lads have come in and put a bit of pride back in the England shirt.

He was with the u21's so it's just a convenient thing to do. He won't play and Pope is probably ahead of him in reality. So the cupboard isn't bare and they didn't want to call up Pope for a game he won't play in as he's probably on holiday with his family.

As others have mentioned, I presume on this occasion he’s only been called up as he’s already been part of the under 21 squad, whereas someone like Pope is prob alt on holiday and it’s a lot of faffing about for him.

I’d be surprised if Gunn made the next international squad should any of the 3 that we’re called up this time, we’re injured again.

Exactly. Pope is probably in Dubai for the weekend.

Loach was called up multiple times in similar circumstances wasn’t he. Although the location of Watford’s training ground would have also played a part.
