Just heard on the wireless that the last decade (I know Guthers, even radio 4 are at it) was the second warmest decade on record in the UK, the warmest being the previous decade.

Stand down fellas, we are cooling down.

Well the trouble with this is that it is based on recent data often taken from stations surrounded by ever increasing concrete - and ignores that small period of a few hundred million years whe the word was a great deal warmer than it is now. And information fromRoyal naval records that the world was a much warmer place in Captain Cook's time.

A lot of the met stations are rural and the Met Office are well aware of the impact of urbanisation on those that aren't.
Yes, of course the earth has been warmer in the past that's irrelevant to this issue.
The world wasn't warmer in Captain Cook's time - naval records are interesting but for different reasons than global temperature trends.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

The wisdom used to be that global warming (or especially the melting of the polar ice cap) will kill the Gulf Stream and make the UK cooler.

Not sure if that is still the thinking!?
