My Italian correspondent informs me that Putin has sent 9 planes full of specialists and equipment to Italy

Is it altruism.
Or is it Putin trying to show how the EU cannot cope or support their members?

Also a very stark contrast with the attitude of the superpower that’s meant to be their ally, which surely won’t go unnoticed.

Good on him anyway.

Russia appears to have a very low number of cases, and just 1 death from the virus at the moment, seems odd for such a populous country...

The Chinese sent them a plane load of ventilators and a load of Doctors about a fortnight ago. I work(ed) with three Italians from the south...they were raging at the EU over the lack of support from both the EU central and individual countries. They were also not surprised at the infection rates due to the two Chinese work zones and the amount of air traffic between the two countries.

I can understand anger at EU, although I don't know what resources the EU have for health crises.

But is it realistic to expect much from other EU countries? I mean basically every other EU country is urgently preparing their own healthcare system because they are only days or weeks behind the exact same situation. China are in the enviable position of having just recovered thousands and having equipment and doctors available, now that domestic demand has dropped.

I didn't think it was realistic either...though I didn't want to say it to them at the time.
