To a certain extent all of the bigger clubs have splashed the cash to see them stay at the top. Just some like Man City spend a lot within a few years which seems to upset some. | | | |

That is part of it but I also think there are other factors too:
a) A substantial fan base that sticks with the club through thick and thin, e.g, Sheffield United, Burnley, Wolves, Portsmouth, even Leeds
b) A perceptible connection between owners, club personnel and supporters
c) A ground and surroundings that have a bit of character, this can rule out clubs that have gone for the convenience of edge of town and identikit new stadia, e.g. Derby, Colchester, Reading |  |

I think some of it is the way the club conducts its business.
ME has carried on the traditions no matter what grievances you have with him.
We don't discuss transfers until after they are done.
When a player is injured we help to recuperate them even though they are out of contract eg Grant Ward.
We have an academy and develop players.
We stand by our manager and don't ditch them when the going gets tough.
ITFC players rarely make the Suns back pages and when they do (Chopra) the club supports them and don't hang them out to dry.

It can mean anything you want it to. Tends to describe clubs that live vaguely within their means and represent and acknowledge their fans and communities. And in return they are something vaguely wholesome you are not embarrassed to support.
So yes - in the last century when Town were one of the most admired clubs in the land, they were held up as 'a proper football club'. And nowadays they are anything but. |  |

In my experience it's typically a defence mechanism for supporters of clubs that once enjoyed some success, but are now largely insignificant, to try and reclaim some sort of high ground vs. the new kids on the block.

A bit of this. Us, Sheff Wed, Forest, Leeds etc will all say we are. I still think that's true but fans more likely to beat that drum because all these clubs have been crap for so long. | |
