"A head of procurement for the NHS has set up a business to profit from the private sale of huge quantities of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, an undercover investigation by the Guardian can reveal."

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2020/may/01/revealed-nhs-procurement-officia

Sometimes it's really hard to understand what goes through peoples heads. I mean given his role in the NHS he must understand how this looks before one even gets into the rights and wrongs of what he is doing?

I'd say it's even worse than that given his job is to try and ensure the NHS gets as much PPE as possible at the best possible price and thus profiting of PPE regardless of who you sell it to is a conflict.

If he can get hold of that PPE privately and sell it privately he can get hold of it for the NHS which is his actual job.

He would've been much better off saying he set up the venture to help source much needed PPE for the NHS, and was selling at cost. Wanted to be proactive in helping get the equipment to his colleagues that need it.

Some people have set up businesses based on delivery, not necessarily in order to get rich but because that's the only way they can survive if their existing business has effectively been shut down.

Could definitely blag that there are sometimes reasons why businesses wouldn't sell to certain organisations, such as working capital constraints. I'm sure the NHS, like many large businesses, use their scale to their advantage in that regard. And acting as an intermediary to unlock providers that aren't currently on the NHS preferred supplier list etc.

There's definitely a better response than saying no comment and hanging up the phone. He's toast now.

There is nothing better for him to say.

His actions are at odds with his job and are corrupt to the core.

He's in a position of trust and has exploited that to the max.

How the heck could he think that was acceptable, or even that he wouldn't be found out?

We're flying PPE in and we will make some money but the object is to sell it at a reasonable price and offer a decent service.

There are a lot of people selling at ridiculous prices and part of the aim is to block that.

In Italy the government is capping 3 ply masks at .50c, no one is allowed to sell for more than that. On the surface of it that's great but this could lead to no private enterprises importing and offering them for sale as a decent medical grade mask costs about .44c to land at the moment.

That's different though.

You're not employed as head of procurement for North London NHS and you didn't create a company only two weeks ago to sell PPE privately when you should be putting all your efforts into sourcing it for the NHS.

Interesting on the cost of the masks.

Yes I fully appreciate what you are saying.

Yesterday we had a packaging company we use touting FFP2 masks at £10, current landed cost is around $1.30

I've no problem with people doubling their money, they have staff and rent to pay but that is ridiculous. I emailed them back and told them to feck off and we won't use them again - which is a bit annoying as their tape is very cheap!

Got no issues with people changing existing business models to survive. None at all - e.g. The publican doing take aways.

But this guy works for NHS and thought "How can I exploit this to make some extra money?" That simply doesn't sit well.

Anyhow - he's is just 1 in a sea of decent NHS employees who are focused on doing what they can to save lives. Easy to focus on the 1 arsehole rather than the 1000s of good people.

The government set up a link for any private suppliers of PPE to offer their services or products and whatever you offer them, be it masks, goggles, storage, office space etc they will call you back within 24 hours and check some details before going forward to second stage.

The reports of people getting their stock or services turned down is absolute rubbish. If they have been turned down it would either be because they are extorting the price and or their product does not meet industry standards.

There was a report recently of some bloke saying he sent his stock to USA because UK weren't interested. The thing is though that USA have different srandards and if something is made for USA market it probably won't pass UK standards because it doesn't carry a CE mark. So a N95 mask is used by USA but we use FFP2, it's the same mask in effect but has gone through different testing procedures and if some chancer has imported thousands of N95's thinking he will sell them to the NHS he will be out of luck - unless it also carries the FFP2 mark and has been tested to CE regs and carries a CE number. Same for N99 / FFP3.

Quite rightly PPE has a mountain of standards to adhere to. Underneath is a guidance for Gowns and this is before you get through stage 1.

Assuming the story is correct, there is a conflict of interest here and putting it bluntly, I’d want him out of the door if he worked for me. As you say, how did he think this would look before you get down to the detail of it? Did he seriously think it wouldn’t get into the public arena? He knows how sensitive this subject is. FFS

The devolved, 'farm it out to the private sector' approach of Boris and his mates makes this sort of thing extremely easy to do.
