You probably should be able to write cleanly and clearly. And probably a good idea to get someone else to proof it - especially in the beginning when you don't know what your own standard is.
But it's critical that you can understand and interpret what the organisation wants to say and what the target reader wants to read. That's the real job and it's not got a lot to do with your standard of English IMO. Much more about the ability to process and package ideas and information. |  |

You don't need an English degree of course, but paradoxically, I'd say you need to write better than that level (which I think is relatively low now) because what you write nowadays will be out there forever, & people may define you by it.
If you want to get up to a really good standard, just read, read, read good quality writing & you''ll be bound to learn what's needed. And definitely don't confine it to newspapers, magazines etc. - read novels, incl the classics old and new - they've already been proof-read & edited to the nth degree, and will be a painless, fun method of getting what you want :) |  |
