Remember folks, punching Nazis is your duty. |
Holocaust denial is not exclusive to Nazis and the far right.

I would prefer to inform them of why their views are comprehensively wrong and offensive but resorting to violence would be me lowering myself to their level, but I’ve never been much good at confrontation

Not only is it an insane conspiracy theory to suggest it didn’t happen, or to a different scale, but I can’t get my head around why people would have a theory about something so offensive to those who lost relatives. Unless they’re just massive antisemites and racists.

If it never happened, then Hitler & co. can be portrayed as decent, patriotic types standing up against evil Commies (the war was started as part of a conspiracy by Winston Churchill to encircle Germany). The camps they were sending Jews to - for everyone's good - only turned bad because the Allies cut off food supplies. All bunk, but it allows them to be nazis while brushing the blatant and unashamed racialist doctrines under the carpet.

A few saying it's beacue they're waking up to the reality that it could well be Biden. They'd have quite happily carried on knowing they wouldn't be challenged if it was obvious Trump was going to get in.

Wether it’s been a conscious decision to allow it to go this far or wether it’s been an internal struggle within Facebook we may never know, I for one am glad this position has now been reached especially considering how entrenched antisemetic views (on both the left and right) are becoming a new acceptable form of racism, it’s a reflection of how society and racism in general is a real worry to us all.

An interesting point for consideration is whether this is a genuinely new and growing racism, or if it is the last hurrah of a set of old attitudes in the face of changing society. At least nowadays (unlike the 1930s and before) anti-semites tend to be rather embarrassed at having their position pointed out and generally deny it in public. Similarly, racists usually try to pretend not to be. One factor worthy of study is the influence of online conspiracy material and who is originating/producing that stuff. What is the social, economic and geographical breakdown of the younger consumers and rebroadcasters of it. How much is being introduced and spread as a tool by outside influences (who don't necessarily really believe in it), e.g. bots, agitators, foreign governments seeking to destabilise rivals.

Unfortunately there are a LOT of agendas at work here so it’s hard to see the wood for the trees sometimes. On a more human level there is less prejudice nowadays. People on average are generally much more accepting of others and people’s race or religion than they’ve ever been. But still enough that prejudice needs to be fought wherever it turns up. The problem is that there appears to be much more agenda-driven racism nowadays. A good example is the entirely normalised islamophobia that’s crept into politics and debate. Or how when faced with Black Lives Matter, too many people are willing to retreat into a belief that whites and their cultural identity are the victims. These are a function of prejudice being less overt but it means that racism itself has become more insidious and difficult to call out. So I think that’s another good reason to put holocaust denial beyond the pale - by the law of probability you’re doing more to stifle racists and extremists than supporting free speech and some notion of healthy debate.

One of the biggest drivers currently is the fact that people feel their lifestyles (even livelihoods) and comfort-zones are under threat. In reality this is due largely to economic and broad social factors, but it's far easier to pin the blame on individual "other" groups than to face such huge, nebulous issues, lacking any kind of obvious solution. It's no coincidence that the National Front gained popularity in the tough late 1970s and nazism sprang from the Great Depression. If there was something for people to be genuinely optimistic about, then I'm pretty sure the racism and xenophobia would once again sink into the background. None of this is to suggest it should not be confronted at every turn, by the way.

Re: the social media stuff and the various algorithms and humans that can pervert it, the following just occurred to me. If you pick a random Wikipedia page (Battenburg cake or Ipswich Town) and click on the first link, then the first link of the next page and so on then you end up at Philosophy and the pursuit of knowledge. I bet it’s the exact opposite in social media and you’ll end up somewhere crazy and nonsensical in a few steps. This is where the conspiracy theorists, extremists and the otherwise radicalised end up. So a reality check or two to break these chains of insanity and deepening echo chambers would be a good thing and help social media avoid doing so much harm.

I usually end up with Babylonian gods, or how to build a hydrogen bomb. Problem with SM reality checks is people ignore them.

The big problem is they’re not baked into the algorithm and are only introduced, like the Twitter warnings re: Trump tweets or people getting banned for spreading blatant racism when enough people complain. I think it’s even worse on YouTube that appears to have very little moderation of its content and comments. I know that’s an awful lot of content to monitor but should be possible to manage and balance out much better with AI machine learning and algorithms. The problem is that these sorts of tactics cut into profits.

Good to see Facebook have finally taken decisive action against Holocaust denial on 20:53 - Oct 13 with 1165 views | BloomBlue | It's not just Facebook that has this problem, many websites suffer with it. The problem is Antisemitism (although I prefer to call it racism) has been creeping more and more into society without enough people challenging it, and once that started it was obvious it would move onto the next level including holocaust denial. It was also good to see Grazia magazine sack Stephanie Yeboah for her comments about the holocaust.
