This is something that continually comes up.
The headline is misleading, the final paragraph basically says it's unlikely we are given Occam's razor and the fact we think we know how to detect if we are and have tried and haven't detected it.
It's certainly possible though, we could likely create such simulations of creatures within the next 100 or 200 years without any problems.

And, as we all know, the indigenous ape-primitives on the planet were usurped by useless incompetents who were more interested in clean telephones and applying the correct mood lighting to tubes of toothpaste than looking after the world around them, meaning that the whole exercise was essentially worthless.
