Anyone know about e-comm and machine learning? Long shot 16:34 - Nov 11 with 818 viewsgiant_stow

A punter's been flogged a machine learning 'reccomendation engine' and isnow gettng the heebeejeebees about the access they've granted, so asked me to check it.

The company claim their engine is taking some time (many days) to learn the shopping habits of her customers - does this sound real to you? SOunds like bollox to me given there's loads of past data to go on she's only shifting maybe 5 products a day, especially as it'll probably just produce a list of personalised reccomended products as an end results.

Sorry if this is borring, stupid, piss-takey or all 3.

Plenty of experience in eCommerce but limited on machine learning. What's the name of the platform and i'll take a look? I have reviewed some myself but not bitten the bullet just yet (number of reasons!) but it does seem to be quite a consistent method that it does take time to build up data as opposed to looking back. It could be down to how the software is built as it will be based on a lot more than just their purchasing history.

THanks for the replying mr - I'm not sure I should name them publically as I've cast doubt on their reputation and their a startup in any case - Eeek! Good that it all sounds familiar to you, as a process at least.

She is only selling five products a day, total?

Is that correct?

With such limited data available, sounds like she's been stitched up. You'd need a much larger dataset than that for ML to be truly effective, I think I'm right in saying.

See footers reply above.

Obvs don’t need to go into details.

But with such a small dataset, what are the chances of say boosting sales by 20%?
Or one extra order a day.

How much is it costing to get that one extra order, by using an ML product, with very little data.
How much is that one order worth.

Maybe more sensible talking to some like Callis about getting more people to the web site. I think he used to do something in that area.

Exactly. This lady sounds like she's been sold quite an expensive kipper when really what she needs is to put money into SEO, paid search and the like to increase traffic. I doubt most SMEs would ever really need ML for their sites.

You're all good people.

This is sound advice.

In return, I'm always on the look out to help anyone with low grade web grunt advice should they need it, but I have the feeling that that sort of thing is easier to come by than machine learning queries!

Also at the risk of being cynical a huge amount of software out there claims to have AI or machine learning when in reality it's just doing trial and error on simple calculations. The concept that a computer can solve all your problems is an appealing one but if you sit down and test these advanced functions they rarely (at least in my experience) live up to the pitch.

There are a lot of charlatans out there.

We unfortunately did business with some once. New business, helping a mate out. The investor didn't do his due diligence and the tech company we'd got in to do the work turned out to be scammers.

Think he lost out a good few hundred k before he found out. Not my money, obviously, but a sickener and something to remind people to be careful with stuff like AI/ML/blockchain if they don't know anything about it.

Sounds too good to be true? Probably is.

Ah, I didn't even see that detail when I scan read the opening post! Yes, 100% this. Nowhere near enough data to get any useful output.

Yeah, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more. You won't get anything off this, and anything you would get would be close to useless.

DM me the company! SEO on multiple eComm sites and I understand ML as a concept.

So it probably is working, but with so low volume she'll have to wait 70 years for the results?
