A bigger fraud than Lambert on 17:28 - Dec 2 with 935 views | factual_blue | If you read even a little bit about randomness and probability, it's clear that these things are...errr...random. Because something has a pattern that doesn't mean it isn't random. I'm sure I've read quite a lot of people pick 1,2,3,4,5,6 every week in the UK lottery. They're just as likely to come up as any other set of numbers.

It is kind of like anthropomorphism with numbers - just because it looks like a human, it doesn't mean that human looking pothole is any more a pothole than the one that St Edmundsbury council routinely bins compensation claims for.

It is extremely rare for multiple winners to share the jackpot. The organisers said 20 people purchased a winning ticket and won 5.7m rand ($370,000; £278,000) each. We'll have to wait and see.

Pattern recognition is a key human survival skill that enabled us to evolve and rise to the top as we did. It's also notorious for leading people to make connections where there's none to made, in reality.

Again, that's because lots of people tend to put sequential numbers in, because there's as much chance of them coming up as going totally random every week.

Like improved performances not correlating with improved results?

A lot of people do actually play that lottery sequence, thinking they're being smart for that reason. The stupidity, of course, is that many others will have had the same bright idea... P.S. Congratulations to you lucky players. I am sure it was all above board. [Post edited 2 Dec 2020 18:04]

This is simply not true. There are multiple jackpot winners all the time. 20 is high but that is because the human brain organises things into patterns and thus this selection is more likely from a human (but equally likely in a computer to any other selection). In the UK between 1000 and 10000 play 1,2,3,4,5,6 so if that ever comes up you're "multiple winners" is going to go out the window. Now of cause it could be fraud, however the numbers themselves aren't any evidence at all of fraud. SB

I'm merely going on what the article says. It says multiple winners of the jackpot is extremely rare. [Post edited 2 Dec 2020 19:20]

Yes, because they don't all pick the same or similar numbers.

Keep going, statistically you are bound to win at some point in the next 268,000 years [Post edited 2 Dec 2020 19:37]
