It's actually very good from most people:

There is one very important exception:

That really is quite shocking. No wonder infection rates are so high. Some people really are stupid - and reckless!

Thanks.

The stats on compliance are really excellent (although there is debate on some of the rules) and shows that the majority are taking the new variant seriously.

However, unfortunately even a small percentage of non-compliance across a large population like the UK is still a significant number. It's these specific cases the police need to try and target and fine to try and bring that number down.

Totally correct around the non-compliance with isolation. The bit they did on Newsnight seem to put this down to the fact the compensation from the government wasn't enough and was even rejected in 60%+ of applications. The government need to sort out this issue ASAP with the correct funding and approving applications.

Interesting stuff, thanks.

No idea how they force people with covid to stay indoors short of locking them up.

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Making sure people don't suffer financially would probably make a massive difference.

Interesting; always good to see some data that can be used to validate what's being said.

So the biggest issue seems to be in isolation, which is an area we haven't really implemented any controls other than telling people what to do. We certainly could have done more on this point, even if it would have sent the freedom bunch into meltdown.

It's more than that though. The payment for isolation is 500 GBP which in a lot of cases isn't going to cover lost earnings.

Coupled with that is the fact that they said on Newsnight that in the NE 66% of isolation compensation claims had been rejected.

The government need to sort this out ASAP.

It's shameful that they are not taking more action on this. This was first highlighted quite a while back (When it was just 18% of those infected who were self isolating)

Mate,

Just watch the last couple of episodes of Newsnight. They have exposed low rates of self isolation and the failure of the scheme designed to help poor people to self isolate.

In a nutshell many people are avoiding testing because they can not afford to self isolate if tested positive. Very easy for others to criticise them but ultimately it is about poverty and that they can not afford to take 2 weeks off work...

The need to put food on the table for some means they are continuing to put themselves and others at risk. The shame should be on those who can but do not help them.

Was that number for people contacted by track and trace rather than those confirmed to be infected?

I agree though, the government has been half-arsed on this since the Spring.

Yes, if the government had just put in place proper, rapid compensation to people self-isolating from early on in the pandemic it would have been a game changer.

Morning Swanners.
Hope you are recovering from the bloody virus.
Question. When you were isolating, were you regularly contacted by track and trace or just told to stay at home initially with next to no follow up?
We were phone called every 48 hours, if for any reason i didn't answer, they were persistent until i did.
There appears to be a degree of inconsistancy, however, with a few other people in the same situation i have spoken to.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Absolutely. They rushed out financial help in LD1 that was widely abused by fraudsters so poor were the controls.

Then, the pendulum swings to the point that 2/3 of people applying for help to isolate are now rejected.

And this has been in the public domain for weeks. 18% compliance in a Sage report a while back.

That's not much is it. On the flipside, one of the supposed benefits of the Australian enforced isolation is that there is no financial support for that element specifically, so the individuals are liable for a 2 week hotel stay plus transport to get there (= many $000s).

Apparently it works as hell of a good disincentive to travel. A very different lever to use, and maybe more effective where there are a lot of unnecessary international journeys taking place. Not so good where the journey are necessary/essential of course.

It is a mess.

To add to this thread, this is also very good on that theme:

"There is, of course, a symbiotic relationship here between journalists, social media rabble-rousers and politicians: the former know that clicky stories and tweets will reel in the punters, the latter that they can waste time on case of individual rule-breaking, rather than explaining why it took over nine months to demand travellers have a negative Covid test before entering the country, or why quarantine was barely enforced, or why our public health messaging still focuses on hand-washing when we should be banging on relentlessly about ventilation and aerosol transmission."

Yes, this is very much where we are now.

Can someone volunteer to link that to every future "I saw x people doing y today" thread we are inevitably going to get for the foreseeable future?
