Immunologist pleads for Germany to accept AZ vaccine for 65+ 10:12 - Feb 28 with 801 viewspointofblue

Seems like they’re really struggling to control the outbreak over there. Our miserable failings led to unnecessarily high first and second waves; their’s seem to be leading to a third.

Bottom line is both Macron and Merkel played politics over the Oxford vaccine and did a very good job in putting their people off it.

Even if it gets approved for the over 65s now many will not take it.

Merkel has more room to manoeuvre as she is able to hide behind the vaccine commission and say they just required more evidence; Macron came out and openly called it quasi-ineffective. And of course, Macron’s words would have an impact elsewhere to.

If they can’t distribute the vaccines they could at least pass them on to countries which do.

It's been poorly handled in some countries in the EU. Some leaders and organisations went very early with their opinions before enough data was available and now the data is available showing AZ is working well in older age groups it's too late and the population won't listen because of the initial statements.

"German health authorities have so far used fewer than 300,000 of the 1.17 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine the country has received."

That is a scandal, countries all over the world would take those vaccines if the German public don't want them. Merkel not taking the vaccine because she is 66 really isn't going to change the messaging. Hard to see why the populace should take it if their leader is unwilling to take it.

I think Merkel said she would take it if the commission cleared it, so there is an out that they could authorise usage in the over 65s and she then has it. Of course, she may have had the Pfizer vaccine already.

They did a reasonable job of putting people over here off too. My parents-in-law who are staunch brexiteers, generally unreasoningly so, who would normally pour scorn on anything uttered by Macron and Merkel wanted the Pfizer job as they didn't trust the AZ one post EU row.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

Wondering if those TWTDrs who are adamant we should have proof of vaccine to enter shops/pubs/restuarants, do I presume they will not therefore be visiting / holidaying in France or Germany for the foreseeable future?

Or is their snobbery reserved only for British refusniks?

Nick Cohen nails it very well :-)

And still there are 130 countries without a single dose.

This doesn't reduce as a risk, until you get the majority of the world vaccinated as those unvaccinated countries will be where the vaccine beating mutation will come from

Yes, they did a great job in trashing the company and the vaccine. They should be getting the champagne and the Liebfraumilch out and toasting their success. Tragic that people will probably die because of their policy, but they’ll lay the blame off elsewhere I’m sure.

It doesn’t matter what they say now. Too late. People won’t take it in those countries and will be suspicious everywhere else. I don’t blame them. If your Leaders and the minor provinces take the approach they did then your decision is easy. Take the good stuff, not the second rate rubbish. And that’s what they’re doing.

VDL this week again said that the U.K. took risks and rushed it. AZs vaccine has been strongly linked to the U.K. by the EU as part of the post Brexit battle so by inference is risky and rushed. Little Macron and Merkel should donate all the EUs AZ vaccine to countries that need it. It’s not as if they can’t afford it.

Think you could rightly say that Germany’s second wave has been pretty shocking when considered against their first wave. Only around 10,000 deaths up until towards the end of October, now over 70,000.
