Probably best to act like the Aussies do and ignore the fact there's one going on. Not been to bed yet, working, alledgedly.

Another ton for an Indian looks likely. Think England have been truly spent this tour. Started off great obviously but everything has been extremely muddly and confused since. Will watch till lunch and wake up to see us 50-4 or something later.

Been really disappointing. Both of these Ahmedabad tests we’ve responded really well on the first half of day 2 after a poor 1st day only to let that slip away from us again. This whole rotation thing is a load of bollox.

To go in with 7 frontline batsmen and score just over 200 after winning the toss is an abject failure. Then to go in with two seamers and flog one of them half to death just before the new ball is due was just bizarre to see. It was pretty clear that Root didn't trust Bess with the ball so seemed a strange selection to say the least. I'd have had Woakes in. (Would have been the first test to feature all of Woakes, Foakes, Stokes). I think Ali would have played before Bess in Sri Lanka if not for him getting covid.

So who's up early for the cricket, who's up cos they haven't been to bed yet on 06:08 - Mar 6 with 1751 views | bluewein | Managed to do every day of this tour, but this morning will probably be my last. Got up in the hope that we could knock those 3 wickets off quickly, but that first hour in particular was desperately frustrating. This rotation thing is awful. That's not said with hindsight, I just can't get my head around why we're putting so little emphasis on a tour of a major test nation. What have we honestly learned from this? Foakes is our best wicket keeper? Many already knew that. Was picking Bess, then dropping him for 2 tests then bringing him back in to get smacked around destroying his confidence worth it? He needs to go away and have a full county season taking wickets before he's considered again now. 5 T20s and 3 ODIs coming up now where we'll probably run an already bolloxed Stokes even further into the ground and barely rotate the team so the ECB can protect their fans with no patience baby. Jeez, it's too early in the morning to get this angry...

Just shows we only needed a couple of batsmen to step up and make decent scores. Can't always rely on Root and Stokes. Edit: Also, the situation with England's openers is a mess again. We can't start an innings giving away a cheap wicket or two. [Post edited 6 Mar 2021 8:22]

Your prediction is sadly accurate. Pope’s innings was bizarre in the extreme. Batting as though he was in a T20 and not trying to save a test.

Certainly exploding off this deck, and then sometimes not and keeping low. Basically we’ve batted poorly but ultimately discovered that their spinners are a world apart from ours. Which we knew already.

Indeed. Although really not sure that Pope needs to be miles down the track there. SB

Certainly one waiting to happen. A couple down the leg side could have got him earlier that really took off. Blimey they’re actually letting someone else have a bowl!

Two and a half days left. OK, Geoffrey Boycott might have been notorious, but someone at the top of the order batting like him would at least ensure we got into the fourth day. Less flippantly, England batsmen need to learn to relax. Or perhaps we need to separate Test and white ball teams altogether.

We just don't have the requisite skills to play against Ashwin & Axer in these conditions, it doesn't matter whether we defend or attack. It's been frustrating but rest assured no other team in the world would have fared any better against this quality of spinner on perfectly designed wickets to help them. You'd have to be in the class of Lara, ABD, Kumar or Mahala against spin to even stand the slightest chance. Really interesting how so much more white ball cricket has effected the longest format, the ball is becoming overwhelmingly dominant against the bat in most conditions, a lot of odd techniques around atm.

As a cricketing nation with the greatest resources and a focus on tests, why are we sending young players to Australia and South Africa and not insisting they spend time in India to learn this aspect of the game? We’re not radical enough.

Only question is whether there are the same openings for young players, given how many native Indians will also be pushing for experience. Also there are linguistic and cultural factors, more pronounced than in Oz or SA. Also, unless they make International level, the experience is not so much use on the County circuit (apart, perhaps, from Somerset).

In that case we need to accept we’ll be unable to compete in India (and Pakistan if we ever play there again). Long England B tours would be an improvement and we shouldn’t be flying in to a country and not playing first class games before test matches. It used to be weeks before a first test, it’s now a matter of days. I know it’s the pressures of the calendar but the ECB really have to look at what the objectives of sending our test team abroad are. If it’s to compete then we need to do better preparation.

England are going to come away from this series with more questions than answers. Hoping that Lawrence can get a 50, would like to see him get a consistent run of games for England in going forwards.
