Having two goalkeepers of equal strength/weakness isn't generally the way to go 12:28 - May 14 with 1083 viewsmonty_radio

Given the rampant transfer speculation that's been sparked recently, where should we be looking to recruit a better goalie?
(N.B. Alisson is only an honorary Scouser).

I don’t think a new keeper is as important as other positions. If we get a fluid team that creates and scores more than a goal every couple of weeks there should be less pressure at the back. Agree though that ideally there would be a clear no. 1.

I think it's my number 1 pet hate in football. You want a defined number 1, with a either a promising kid on the bench or someone in the Autumn of their career, who is happy to be an understudy / cup keeper. The chopping and changing of keepers since Bart left annoys me no end. We need consistency in that area.

Seriously, we HAVE to do better than Holy or Cornell.

Above that thing where players don't have to put the ball inside the area that was marked out for putting the ball inside when taking a corner?

Christian Walton has been released from Brighton.

Cook had him for two years on loan at Wigan so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see that one happen.

Couldn’t agree more. Always seems to me to be a sign of weakness in management. You never see good managers fall into the trap of not clearly identifying their number one keeper.

Yeah, I also think it's an area of the pitch you don't really want pressure for a place. You want your keeper to know they're top dog, number 1, that arrogance about them to command their box, bark orders at the defence. The best keepers are always a bit nuts, they need to love themselves a bit and have a bit of smoke blown up them. Dropping them every other week isn't conducive to that. Cornell would be fine as an understudy if he was up for it, acknowledging that's his role, in a Gerken type way. Needs to be capable if called upon, but know their place.

Ideally we would move Holy on and trade up with a new #1.

Like I say, if we get the team functioning as an attacking force it won’t be so much of a problem. Neither of them are championship quality but they’ll do for L1

Big lad, still young for a keeper, did well for Blackburn in a half decent Championship team. We could do worse.

Good goalkeepers make all the difference in whatever level of football you play, it’s all relative. Neither Holy or Cornell are good enough if we as a club have serious ambitions to get promoted. I keep reading this argument that there are other concerns in the side, a new keeper isn’t a priority. I disagree. Good sides are built from the back, that’s where the foundations are laid and that starts with getting a decent keeper through the door with pedigree during the summer.

We need a #1. Ralph Hasenhüttl at Southampton doesn't want a number one keeper and it just makes zero sense to me. I hate the regular changes of keeper. I hope we sell one, keep one as back up and sign a number one.

Truly impaired.
