The Power of three: Three positives, Three negatives from yesterday 09:23 - Aug 22 with 1399 viewsunstableblue

Three positives:

- ridiculous booing aside, the crowd, especially lower North really kept going, buoyed by some better energy and sustained waves of attack (in part) by Town in an ‘thrilling’ game of football
- Burgess, Edwards, Bonne and Carrol look great additions and a significant upgrade to previous players
- Cook made a very effective tactical/system change to tighten the game and win the midfield and game, which had basically worked - kudos to him

Three negatives

- Harper and especially Evans did not look confident, or have the desire to want to grab the game, Evans’ absolute howler lost us the three points
- MK Dons were the better side technically, in shape and in system, they outplayed us for long periods, and had excellent patterns of play. We also looked good at times, but Town have looked inferior to ‘lesser’ sides technically, regularly for 15 years
- KVY and Coulson had really promising moments going forward but defensively they got out of shape, similarly their interfaces with Burns and Edwards, and in turn Fraser are still not clicking…. We need a week on the training pitch

Huge pressure on the players now ahead of Wimbledon game. AFC will come at us early with the knowledge we are getting nervous for a win. We’ve got to stay composed. Stick to the plan. Get the fans backing us again. Pivotal moment in Town history - win and then a further couple of weeks of training ahead of home to Bolton (assuming Wycombe is off), full squad.

I’ll be there Saturday and cannot wait to get back to PR.

Poll: How do you rate the new home kit out of 5?

I think MK Dons outplaying us has been a bit overplayed. They had a lot of the ball and a lot of speculative shots, but I don't think they were anywhere near as threatening as we were in attack. We looked shot in the last 15, but that's generally what happens when you don't kill off a winnable game and concede your 3rd soft equaliser against the run of play in 5 days.

They reminded me of a better version of us from last season - or maybe a better version of us from previous matches this season - plenty of possession but in non-dangerous areas. The fact they dominated the ball but the xG finished 1.51 - 1.47 in our favour shows that we actually did more with it than they did considering the respective possession.

Positives:
- When we clicked, some of our forward play was superb
- Kyle Edwards... I cannot wait until he is on the same wavelength as his team mates
- Burgess is a decent find at centre back

Negatives:
- Our lack of control in the centre of the park was shambolic
- That mistake
- The lack of urgency to press for a winner at 2-2

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

MK were exactly what they're known for, keeping the ball and making you move.
For all the ball they had, it was our own attacks that gave them their own.

I dunno if I'd say "lack of control" for most of the game. Both teams were trying to do different things with the ball - MK Dons were trying to work quick passing triangles through the middle to their Number 10. We were trying to get the ball forward quickly via our full backs and wide players. Prior to conceding the 2nd, I'd say our style of play was the one that was working most consistently. I think possession stats reflected that more than anything.

Regarding "urgency" at 2-2, well, I'm not sure it was urgency, felt more like conceding yet another stupid goal, having worked hard to get ahead against a decent team, after 3 weeks of doing similarly self-destructive things, just absolutely killed us mentally and drained whatever energy was left in our legs. We've got the resilience of a twig right now and that snapped it. On the back of a 3 game winning run it's much easier to dust yourself off and go again...

You do realize they have just got a new manager in and several new players, yet still we were second best and reverted to route one to score. We were chasing shadows and got lucky, but hey that happens and I for one will take that but lets not gloss over it, the Americans and the CEO will be demanding that we shape up quickly, I have been waiting for us to put a sustained run together since BFJ was here.

Route one to score ? Wow, you've done well to pull a negative out of that first goal.

Cracking effort

Not sure the change in manager is relevant. They do indeed have some new faces but the general set up of everything is the same and built on the same foundation of possession football. And the rest of your post well let's just leave it there

Yep, of course it is. You could see they were very comfortable with playing that way. It's nuts to expect us to be able to do the same after only meeting each other a few weeks ago.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?
