Went to a party in Plumstead Saturday and had a long conversation with a Millwall fan who works in NatWest building (aka Tower 42).

He told me that Clive Woods works there as a messenger/postman commutting in from Narfuk.
He's also, apparently, still one of the fittest ones... He'll be 74 this year.

That is really sad. An ITFC legend, at 74 years old, having to commute 2 hours to work as a messenger boy. (How is that even still a job in 2021?)

I’m surprised to hear that. Maybe he enjoys working? Some people just do.

Good player was Clive. Bit in and out at times.performance wise, but boy could he play. Forever in my memory for that goal against Leeds in the 3rd replay in 75. I was right behind the goal in that shoebox stand at Filbert Street and swear I heard the net rustle as it flew in!

Then there was the Cup Final. I suspect Pat Rice spent years unravelling his legs after that torment.

“Woods fries Rice” was the flag I recall.

Most skillful winger we have ever had.

Maybe, but I doubt it.

Some people do. A golf acquaintance is a postie around here (though he’s not too well at the moment sadly) and he really loves his job. Messengers and such like are mostly gone from the Civil Service places I worked in now, but looking back they were quite a contented lot, relatively. I hope that’s the case with CW.

Why do you assume that just because of his age and the length of the commute (and possibly the fact he was a footballer), he doesn't enjoy it? If he was doing it out of necessity, would he perhaps not have got a job closer to home?

I reckon he is doing it in the hope that he gets a few minutes in the lift with the CEO so that he can pitch him his brilliant idea, "You know, for kids!"

Anyone get the reference?

An old boy is still working on the checkout at my local co-op, at the age of 83.

He loves the banter, and is quicker and more personable than some of the much younger employees.

Fair play for the commute and still working at 74!

My dad was a postie at tower 42 for 20 years, he used to chat and moan about Ipswich to Craig Finbow from Blue Monday!

maybe my memory is playing tricks on me , but i seem to remember he worked for hughs the electrical company.
his first few games for us saw him playing down the middle up front. a few in the crowd said he will never make a player. then bobby put him wide and the rest is history

forensic experts say footers and spruces fingerprints were not found at the scene after the weekends rows

He was quite brilliant in the 78 side, but amazingly by October 79 we were rock bottom of the table, with 10 of the first XI of the 80/81 side in situ.

Woods departed to Norwich, Gates took his place, the formation was changed to remove the winger, we motored up the league to take a UEFA Cup spot by one point, and the rest is history.

Probably just doesn’t enjoy being home.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
