I'm not sure if they're any worse than, say, thirty years ago. It's just we can see every goal replayed and social media/forums results in group think, where people can join together in agreement (or disagreement) rather than just having a small group of friends in a pub etc. We're also at our lowest level in a while - the further down we go the worse the refs will be, and the Premier League officials make enough errors, even with VAR.

A few soft decisions but then he seemed to wise up. I actually thought he let the game flow relatively well after that, for what was a pretty physical encounter.

Walton completely impeded for their goal. Ref was really lenient on their gamesmanship all through the game.

Absolutely. Wycombe are absolute sh*thouses, the dive from Wheeler was it? then trying to pull Evans up, when Morsey got involved was ridiculous. To think there are people that wanted/Want Ainsworth here...

Is it me or are ALL refs at this level utter sh**? on 00:05 - Nov 3 with 1036 views | MaySixth | I sat with the referee assessor tonight on the halfway line. Official tonight was given a good rating. Interesting insights into how ref has to go with tempo and flow of game. I thought he was pretty good tbh - tried to let the game move along, gave us a few, gave them a few. Met Alan Parry afterwards, ex broadcaster, massive Wycombe fan, he said the ref was s**t but said we deserved to win, just not 4-1

Is it me or are ALL refs at this level utter sh**? on 00:29 - Nov 3 with 1001 views | Bluedicea | Refs get far more decisions right than wrong. It's just that the odd 1 or 2 bad decisions out of the 100's they make throughout a match stand out because it's easier to criticise than praise.

I was in the away end, fairly centrally, and didn't see anything really that bad on Walton. The highlights made it look like he was blocked off though. Sometimes those ones get given, sometimes they don't. I thought the ref made a few odd calls tonight, the late one on, I think Burgess in the 2nd half looked a stonewall booking, but, unless I missed it, I don't even think he got a proper talking to. Still we won, sent a message, laid down a marker and not even a "sht ref" could stop it.

I thought the ref was alright yesterday, didn't get every decision right but didn't fall for Wycombe's gamesmanship so made it a decent game. The one decision he really got wrong was not sending off Hanlan for a second booking.

Is it me or are ALL refs at this level utter sh**? on 08:52 - Nov 3 with 693 views | ArnieM | The Ref definitely bottled it regarding what was clearly a second yellow card incident for one of their players. I did wonder if it was the Town players surrounding him after that tackle, that made he decide not to be seen to be “swayed” by player power,

Lots of refs are reluctant to give the automatic 2nd yellow & I get their point. Obviously, some are stricter on this & this leads to inconsistency, which fans hate when it goes against them & conveniently ignore when it's in their team's favour. Anyone who thinks refs are bad should try reffing even a park game Y then they would see how hard it is. I reffed a few college 2nd XI games years ago & quite often you weren't sure if it was a foul or not or whose throw it was, so you guessed & stuck to your decision. It has been analysed that league refs get around 90% of their decisions right.

No, they aren't. They are the best they can be, and the fact that you think they are all rubbish confirms this. A modern referee is officiating in the same way as was deemed fit for purpose in 1898. One bloke (or woman) running around a pitch, needing the fitness and speed to keep up not only with play but also to get into the correct position to make the decision needed now and then the decision needed next. Most referees are into their 40s, yet a modern footballer is younger, fitter and faster than ever before in history, the game is faster, the pitches are better, the ball quicker and moves around in the air. The best referees in the country are officiating the premier league, they get VAR and perfect pitches and brilliant floodlights and they get things wrong. The video replay gets things wrong, the rules are interpreted and not black and white. We are in the third tier, so we aren't getting the best. We as the spectators have a different view of the action, we are 50+ yards away, we can't hear what is being said, we are biased to our own team, some (many) of us don't know the laws of the game. Sadly, up and down the country the attitude that "all referees are rubbish" is permutating. Parents on the side line with 12 year old children playing hurl abuse at 14 year old referees who are just starting out, but refuse to step up to even run the line themselves. I've heard that on some weekends 40% of grassroots games are now lacking a referee.

Yes he was and its that inconsistancy that is so annoying because Burgess was penalised for doing less when Stockdale fell over him .

I was a referee up to my early 50s and you’re right about people who haven’t tried it not realising how difficult it is. Positioning is everything and few realise the amount of effort required to try and keep in the optimum place to get the best angle and distance to be able to make the right decision Even then, a player can block your vision at the crucial point. I also suspect few realise how difficult it is to scan everything going on in a crowded penalty area. You are subconsciously drawn to the ball but if you focus on that you can easily miss things happening on the periphery. I always remember a training video where we were told to concentrate on the ball in a basketball clip. At the end the trainer asked who saw the Gorilla? Everyone thought he was mad until he replayed the video in slow motion and showed where a man dressed as a Gorilla appeared on the court! No one noticed because of their focus on the ball.
