https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/nov/10/extreme-wealth-polluting-c

"Most of our dysfunctions are caused by pandering to the rich. The way governments have allowed democracy to be eroded by lobbyists (including politicians with lucrative private interests); the deregulation that lets corporations, oligarchs and landlords squeeze their workers and tenants, then dump their costs on society; the permissive environment for profiteering during the pandemic; the degradation of health, education and other public services by the constant drive towards privatisation: all these are symptoms of the same condition."

"Preventing systemic environmental collapse means driving extreme wealth to extinction. It is not humanity as a whole that the planet cannot afford. It’s the ultra-rich."

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

What level of wealth is acceptable in your opinion? Not a loaded question, i'm genuinely interested.

Very true.

We’re seeing more extreme wealth and extreme inequality than we’ve ever seen before. It’s been capitalism on steroids for the last 30-40 years for many developed countries but unlike the post-War growth there’s no indication that this is making people happier or healthier. Certainly hasn’t helped the planet much either.

Time for a reality check. And in all likelihood a reset.

the personal consumption of the ultra rich - oligarchs and billionaires as monbiot defines them - is neither here nor there in terms of co2 and climate. there aren't enough of them for even their obscene consumption to have an effect. what matters is the consumption of the top 1% - over $172,000 (£125,000) according to monbiot - AND the top 10% - over $55,000 (£40,000) again from monbiot. so monbiot's attempts to turn climate change into class war just don't work - it's the middle classes in the wealthy west who are the issue - the sort of people who post on football message boards in fact.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

There is clearly far too much extreme wealth which definitely needs to be address but as a possibly interesting (or not) aside, the billionaires of today are far "poorer" in relative terms than those of the past such as Rockefeller, Carnegie or even Mansa Musa.

You’re not asking me so beg pardon but nobody needs to be a Billionaire and the ones who are, either avoid tax due to the American system or are billionaires due to them drastically exploiting the working classes of the developed and less developed world.
The trouble is for eg Musk doesn’t take a salary so he doesn’t pay income tax. I would come up with some wheeze to tax unrealised gains.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Poll: With Evans taking 65% in Huddersfield, is the Banter Era over?

Yeah, you’re probably right about the late 19th century, early 20th century as being the high point for that extreme wealth. As well as the wealth and global power of the church, and various kings, queens, emperors etc.

After that and responding to the death of empire/rise of democracy there was more of a redistribution of money and power. But in later years that seems to be going the other way again. So yes, I’m really lamenting a return to the more unaccountable, undemocratic and retrograde robber barons and elites.

Agree, I have often said I could not morally be a billionaire. The only reason I occasionally succumb to the Euromillions when it's a massive prize is the thought of sharing it all out.

I'd like to hear a number though if anyone wants to offer one.

I think you're spot on there.
There are literally millions of people in this country alone who think flying to 2-3 foreign holidays every single year is perfectly fine
They will continue to do so unless drastic measures are introduced which doesn't look like happening.

We definitely need to lose about 3-4 billion ultra rich people from the face of the earth.
