TWTD/mumsnet question of the day 14:46 - Jan 6 with 928 viewsDubtractor

Are any of you clued up on home insurance?

As mentioned before we are on the lookout for a new home, and a few places we've spotted come with a thatched roof, and in addition often have old style wooden doors (so without the complex locking mechanism).

I cam work out for myself that this will mean higher insurance costs, but does anyone have any ball park figures for how much more?

I would contact my current insurer but finding a phone number to contact them is like finding a needle in a haystack!

My sister (who you know) just had her renewal come through for her thatched house at £3k.

I work in commercial insurance as a broker. In the commercial world, you are probably looking at 5X the cost minimum. But there is a lot of caveat's in that as commercial is a lot about the trade within the location as well.

I would personally budget 3-5 times the normal cost to give you a ballpark figure.

There are specialist thatch house insurers out there if you do a quick google search

Hope this helps

Your current insurer, if you’re with a mainstream one, probably won’t be much use, as most will have a fairly vanilla footprint as to what they’ll cover

Short answer is more but depends on a wealth of other factors, so really your best bet is having a look for some specialists and getting quotes on potential properties. Alternatively you could whack quotes through the likes of CompareTheMarket but probably won’t be the most accurate gauge as most of their providers won’t quote, or if they do will probably be uncompetitive compared to specialists

Disappointed this thread doesn't mention a special cup on the bedside table. For shame.

Cheers for the responses - I'll obviously do some more digging, but seems like the general theme is that it will be a lot more expensive!

I used to have a thatched cottage, mid terrace, ridiculously large wood burning stove for the size of house it was, history of a substantial fire in the immediate past...I was able to get reasonably priced building insurance back then, this was just over twenty years ago, with a little persistence in searching out quotes but cannot remember who with. Might have gone into the Swinton office that used to be next to CB1 in Cambridge and talked to someone face to face.

My current place is non-standard construction (mainly wood, including the roof) and I have been able to get quotes online and get it insured through the comparison sites, I think there is a wormhole you go through to answer some extra questions and after ten minutes or so of getting the policy proposal referred to the expert they come back with a competitive price. Never underestimate the desire for an extra bit of commission on the part of an insurance broker...
