Just finished watching 100 foot wave - incredible six part doc on sky (hopefully available elsewhere too).

I’m not usually into sports docs but found this one great and I have zero interest in surfing. It follows about a 10 year period of big waves been discovered for surfing in Nazare, Portugal. It’s jaw dropping footage and some twists and turns through the documentary that sucked me in.

Also watched 14 peaks on Netflix this week which was a documentary about Nims Purja’s attempt to climb 14 +8000ft peaks in 7 months. Never been done before.

There’s the obvious list of All or Nothing Docs, Sunderland til I die, The Last Dance etc but wondered if there were any more niche ones that surprised people. I really need to find time to get through Drive to Survive as well.

Really wanted to watch this but didn't know it was on Sky, thanks for flagging!

The two Escobars, which is on Iplayer currently. And Free solo are both very good.

Free Solo is probably the maddest thing I've ever seen. Quite incredible what Alex Honnold accomplished.

Don’t know if they’re available in UK but ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary series has some incredible work. Their one on Hillsborough was really well done. Obviously most of their content is US-centric but still some great viewing.

Is that where the surfers have an equally nutty jet skiing mate to tow them out, and to grab them before they get smashed into the rocks? Bonkers!

That’s the one.

Rated 100% on rotten tomatoes.

Gnarly stuff

You can actually watch the live webcam where they’re currently surfing some beasts: https://nazarewaves.com/en/webcams

A clutch of them are available on Disney Plus in the UK. Mainly basketball related. Not my sport some great docs there - Survive and Advance is an incredible story - highly recommend it

Some others worth watching: Hoop Dreams, Maradonna, King of Kong (not quite sport but amazing story), fire in Babylon …

Some more surfing for you, saw this at the Gaumont when it came out, mainly for the Pink Floyd soundtrack:

King Of Kong probably one of my all time favourite documentaries.

I really enjoy Drive To Survive, I know you already mentioned it, not that into F1 these days but do enjoy that and pretty much happy to use that as my way of watching, albeit somewhat behind.

The one about the England Cricket team was good, can't remember the name, The Edge maybe?

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

100ft wave and 14 peaks are both very good.

Another interesting documentary is the one about Andre the Giant. Its on Sky documentaries I believe.
