Taking back control , part 56784321 on 11:45 - Jan 28 with 703 views | giant_stow | Interesting stuff, but I wonder if those exports would still go though in the event of Russian gas actually being turned off / us having a home shortfall? Wouldn't that be the moment for the Govt to intervene? I know nothing obvs - would be interesting to get the opinion of one of the know somethings on that...

I'd be surprised if the Govt could overturn the licence agreements for extraction and production. Or even if they'd want to. I could well be wrong of course, but these licences have been bid for and paid for by the private companies. I imagine it'd be completely different if we had our own nationalised company of course. You're probably right, but maybe there's some national emergency clause in those contracts? I do remember when Macron threatened to turn off the lecy to the channel islands, people came back at him talking about breach of contract, but maybe there was no justifiable national emergency for France in that case? The other consideration in this is that it would be a bit of a weird situation to turn off our gas exports to Europe, just when we're getting the almighty hump with Russia for threatening to doing the same. Edit: I've got that last bit wrong - they haven't threatened to turn it off- we're worried they might do that in retaliation for sanctions - they've slowed the flow to bump up the price (probably). We have LOTS of nationalised utility companies in all fairness. It's just that they belong to other countries.

Much as with the UK 'private' rail companies, which are owned and ran by EU state owned companies - and now receive greater subsidies than before. This obsession to have public assets handed over to wealthy private companies has yet another costly failure. 'In 1996, under the defence secretary Michael Portillo, the Conservative government sold 57,400 houses used by military service men and women and their families to Annington Homes for £1.7bn in a sale and leaseback deal. In one swoop. The value of the properties has ballooned under Annington’s ownership to many times their original purchase price, meaning the taxpayer has missed out on any profits from the property boom. They were valued by Annington at £7.6bn last year, while their vacant possession value is estimated at £10bn. The MoD is paying about £180m a year in rent plus £140m in repairs and upgrades. However, the National Audit Office concluded in a 2018 review that taxpayers were between £2.2bn and £4.2bn worse off as a result of the arrangement. The NAO said the MoD had “lost out on billions of pounds’ worth of increases in asset values, while Annington has made a significantly higher return on its investment than expected”. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jan/27/guy-hands-terra-firma-annington It is hard to fathom why those lower down, other than as a forelock tugging show of deference, support such stuff. Do they really think the likes of Rees-Mogg cares a flying fck about them. And that he is in cahoots with them in putting it to the 'establishment' - of which he is not a member, though he is a member of Batley Working mens club.
