O’Brien is a good buffer against the more extreme silliness of the right wingers at LBC and in general.
But a bit of a wet blanket on progressive policies. His policing of the debate tends to be quite disappointing and narrowly centrist for someone who is branded here and elsewhere as “left-leaning”.

Bitter-sweet really.

How do you mean (re your second para?)
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa
How do you mean - only taking pro his own view calls?
Pretty much. All presenters do it to a certain extent but more so with regards to interesting or sticking to the subject calls. I listen to LBC all the time when I can apart from Shelagh Fogarty and I rarely catch Eddie Mair.
The only presenter as bad as O'Brien for ignoring opposing calls was Farage.
“Hello, I'm your MP. Actually I'm not. I'm your candidate. Gosh.”

Fair enough - must admit, I don't listen as much as I used to, so take your word for it. Surprised though - I thought he liked nothing more than ripping into the other side.

Well, he’s liberal not left-wing. So he’s leaning left away from those further to the right on a lot of issues but nothing like enough to provide a real balance.
There’s a reason that our Overton window is firmly on the right side, and there’s little opposition and debate such as a social democratic alternative, when O’Brien is considered left-leaning.
Pointing out the lunacy and stupidity of right-wing populism is half the job, you need to fill the void with compelling and evidence-based alternatives for a better way forward.

Thanks for the reply. I think you're right to say hes considered left-leaning in the context of LBC, although that's ever changing now they've moved slightly from the righty start point years back.
I don't listen enough to defend him from your charge of not suggesting alternatives, although I suspect his listenership might drop if he preached any more than he does.

No probs.
The “left-leaning” framing also starts off the Guardian article but that says a lot about the Guardian’s left credentials nowadays too.
Agreed. Anyone who would listen to him talk about progressive policies wouldn’t hang around for the rest of LBC. He’s there to dynamise the centre-right debate where the mass audience is.

My criticism of O'Brien is that he over filters his calls
how does that work ? does he finds out what the caller views are before he let them on the radio. if so wouldn't people like you who thinks this tell him one thing off air , then ask him something different on air.
forensic experts say footers and spruces fingerprints were not found at the scene after the weekends rows

I actually got on there one time years back, to my shame. (I only did it to shock mrs ullaa who was listening in the other room, not knowing I was calling: "over the Ullaa in Kilburn...Hi James, first time caller... don't be nervous"...etc...)
Anyway, the answer is you call up and tell a researcher / producer what you want to say and if they like it, they call you back and put you on hold, listening to the show until you're teed up.

Of course, the researcher will grill you before you get on and they tend to know if you are speaking with forked tongue. They also have a history of all your texts and phone calls and I wouldn't be surprised if a complete analysis of your political and sexual background pop up as soon as your number appears.
I've been on a few times and they know who I am and where I live - "Hello Lucan" they will say as soon as they answer.
Back in what seems another life I have done a couple of phone ins for local radio answering questions, and even then (back in the 80's) I could select the calls I wanted to take - in case i didn't know the answer to one.

Are you one his regulars then? Or do you speak another presenter?
