Wolfenden was immense tonight… 00:49 - Feb 23 with 1164 viewsunstableblue

He looks utter class and his defending and positioning is the best it’s been.

Edmundson was also really good this evening.

23 and 24 years old respectively. Could be massive players for a number of seasons for us. But without promotion I wonder how secure they are here.

What contract is Wolfenden on??

Four year contract signed in July 2020, so has two years to go.

Defensively he was decent tonight but panic seemed to seize him as the match went on - his forward passing went increasingly wayward though, in fairness, he wasn’t the only one.

Yeah, woolfy shanked several fairly simple passes to burns down the channel in that second half. Unusual for him.

Defensively he was excellent though.

Whilst I agree defensively, I thought his distribution when bringing the ball out of defense was, in the main, appalling. Too often he tried a long ball forwards, usually to no-one and nearly always giving possession away. If that was what he had been told to do, then obviously not so much his issue, but if that is what he being expected to do, he needs to work on it, a lot. He was much better when playing the ball forward, short, into a midfield position.

Cheltenham did a very good job of blocking our midfield 2 and reducing the pockets where Celina and Chaplin like getting into (especially 2nd half). Woolf had very few options when on the ball which caused those longer passes down the wing.

Woolfenden has generally been brilliant, but he does have a habit of trying to launch impossible through balls from the half-way line that even David Beckham couldn't pull off.

Think towards the end yesterday there were generally fewer options for shorter balls because we'd taken a midfielder off, though.

Agree in the 2nd half. Cheltenham packed the middle a bit more 2nd half. I’m not sure that meant Woolfy had no other options though: no other defender was constantly punting it forward and cheaply giving away possession.

There was very little options and game so compressed, whilst he didn't play those balls well they were more often than not such low percentage passes that unlikely to do so - he lipped one great one to Chaplin who couldn't control it (and was it him to Jackson for the same - possibly not)

Where we really missed Evans to take the ball off him and drive us a bit further up

Yep. Rock at the back, wasteful going forward. Defensively though I think that’s as good as I’ve seen from him - he nodded it. Edmundson on the other hand …
