You would think that “I love you, can you lend me another 10 grand and also open a credit card in your name for me?” Would be enough of a red flag for most functioning adults. But obviously not!

There are people in this country who go to work every day thinking hard work pays. Make of that what you will. You telling me if someone rolled up at the Horse like “Can I be mates with you and ride in my private jet” you wouldn’t go?!

They met for less than an hour and she jumped on a private plane with him - desperate isn’t the word. I genuinely wouldn’t. That doesn’t excuse the bloke doing what he did, but the first girl was tragically stupid and naive. He’d have tried it with 10 others that same day and 9 would have said no.

Some people here evidently don’t understand how love bombing works. They should count themselves lucky to have never fell victim of the manipulative sociopaths that walk among us. These are life changing and traumatic events. I speak first hand. The other thing people fail to understand is the bloke was evidently a very skilled conman, similar to the Puppet Master documentary also on Netflix. Some lies are so big it’s almost impossible to not believe it. If someone covered in bling, staying in a posh hotel and surrounded by “security” invited me on their private jet, I’d honestly see the appeal for the more implusive to go and not question it. It is not easy to fake being that rich to such a level the Tinder Swindler did. I bet many of you know a few flash types over the years who turned out to be debt ridden liars or cons. Furthermore, let’s not forget the guy love bombed and quickly flipped to coercive control through threats to their own safety. It’s not so much about the story being believable at that point and more about control through applying high stress. To assume she was any less than a victim is an insult to abuse victims. Who is saying that she wasn’t a victim. In the end she clearly was. But there was a very big leap on her own part to put her in such a position. A while before she was transferring money she was jumping in a private plane having known somebody for 30mins with his “ex wife”, Kid, etc. To me the saddest thing of all was how desperate she must have been. As I said before she’d have been in the 1% of girls that said yes to that initial request - suspect he had plenty of coffee dates that morning.

Indeed. Yes they were gullible but slamming them for being greedy or money-obsessed is harsh and slightly sexist if you aren’t also going to criticise the scammer, who quite literally devoted his entire life to his greed and money-obsession.

He was an extremely competent and manipulative con man. He knew exactly what he was doing, how to coerce and when to press the right buttons. Thousands would have fallen for it. Which is why they made a documentary about him in the first place. To paraphrase James O'Brien, love for the conned, contempt for the conner.

It amuses me people are like I’M TOO SMART TO FALL FOR MANIPULATION. They aren’t. No one is. The narcissists that make interesting docs are always the ones too mad to be believed, hence their interest to pop culture, but these same tactics on a smaller scale play out daily in offices, relationships and politics.
