Internal opposition to Putin can bring an end to this, whether it’s Western sanctions causing deprivation or political discontent, we have to hope the Russian populace has had enough of crime in their name.

For what it's worth I think Putin will back down as he will soon realise this was a really poor move. He seems to be the only person on earth who thinks the invasion has any logic to it. Trouble is he's effectively in total control with zero opinion from anyone else in 20 odd years.

Not sure we are in any position to talk about nostalgia for WW2 leaders etc. Some of the myths around Churchill for example still shape a lot of British attitudes too. But I wonder if it'll be like the Arab Spring in that it'll be the youth and "Westernised" minorities that bear the brunt of this opposition. It's quite possible Putin didn't anticipate that, but will it make much difference? Conversely the Ukrainians are discovering Russian saboteurs overnight apparently. Hardly a surprise but I wonder how widespread these internal threats will be.
