Gerrard and Lampard… 20:15 - Aug 31 with 1520 viewsSeablu

It used to be said they couldn’t play in the same team, which was why England pitifully underachieved throughout that ‘golden generation’ period.

Having watched both their miserable sides in the Premier League this season, it could be argued they can’t manage in the same league either..

Then you have the captain of that “golden generation” pimping himself out to slave traders, Michael Owen making cringe inducing promos for another lot of slave drivers, and Wayne Rooney morphing into Phil Mitchell..

Years on I still find it ludicrous that Paul Scholes was played out-of-position in order to accommodate both Gerrard and Lampard.

You make a very valid point as it happens.

Slightly conversely, I don't get why people put either or both of Gerrard or Lampard down, they were both absolutely magnificent players who achieved almost unrivalled success.

Following the Keano model innit - Be Very Famous, get parachuted into a soft gig in order to look good, take on another job that actually involves having to do some managing, fail, go on the telly.

They need need Phil and Sitters to go all starstruck and they'll complete the set.

As players , I though Gerrard was head and shoulders above Lampard. He dragged some pretty average Liverpool sides on, to win trophies.. Lampard always had the luxury of there being better players than himself in those Chelski sides..
Gerrard's probably got a little bit of credit in the bank as a manager. From his Title winning Rangers stint. But looks to be struggling in a much more competitive Prem'.
Not sure why Lampard is managing a Prem' club. Certainly not off the back of any managerial achievements..

Yes, Gerrard was the better player. He was top notch, but Lampard was very effective in his own way.

I never understood why it’s automatically assumed top players = top manager. It’s been that way for as long as I can remember. Yes, Robson, Ramsey, Revie, Clough (but for injury) and others have managed it, but many haven’t. Why did Bobby Charlton and Moore flop? The skill set is different.

Why Everton thought Lampard would be a good fit for them is lost on me. I can see why AV took on Gerrard, but it’s not looking good for either.

They were great players but Paul Scholes was a lot more effective in the middle.

My comment was rather poorly worded in the sense that I still find it odd that when we had great midfielders like them, we were still trying to get them to play 4-4-2, rather than trying other systems.

I wasn't digging you out as I largely agree.

My comment really was that I am puzzled why people love to hate or either relish any failure of either Gerrard or Lampard.

As far as multi millionaire footballers go they have earned their corn and seem to be decent human beings.

Johnny Wark said that he was at a function once and Gerrard came up to him and said (you need to read this in a whining scouse accent),

"Eeeh, Johnny, someone just told me you scored 25 goals from midfield in a season"

JW (In drunken Scottish accent) - "See you Stevie, it was 36 actually"

Gerrard walked off and 5 mins later came back with a bottle of champagne

I feel like both have tried to stage manage their managerial careers, Lamps a bit more.

Lamapard, turns down town because he wouldn't have enough money. Goes to Derby where they are throwing it around like an ownership group hell bent on wrecking a club.

Goes to Chelsea where his club legend status automatically buys him a longer honeymoon period at a time when there is no expectation as they can't sign anyone.

Turns down Norwich (which you can't blame him) becsues, well he thought it would be too hard. Had he turned them down because, well its Norwich and he wouldn't touch them with Gerrads that would be fine, but he didn't, too hard. Has gone to Everton where again he has a nutty ownership group who will mostly do what he wants IE spunk money up the wall faster than his uncle can stash it in a moody bank account.

Stevie G, goes rangers, where he benefits from Mark Warburtons good work, a league in which there are only 2 horses and the other one is so far ahead that he only has to come 2nd to be successful. Lucks out with Rogers leaving Celtic thinking Lennon is tbe answer..Jumps ship the moment he realises the other horse has saddled up with a better Jockey and heads to Villa.....

Villa who finally have owners willing to invest, will let him chuck cash at players like Coutinhio, Villa who have minimal expectation following on from Dean Smiths shocking start to their second PL season but still plenty of cash

If they were playing for England these days, all of Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard would surely play in a midfield 3. They were of 4-4-2 era which was why Scholes ended up on the left. Beckham was always going to be the right midfielder. I think it's a testament to Scholes that they trusted him to do a job out of position.
