Why do we have to have a head of state? 09:01 - Sep 11 with 4712 views | BanksterDebtSlave | The choice is always presented as monarch or president but why can't it be neither?

The whole class system should be abolished.

There isnt a class "system". You cant abolish something about which there are no laws.

You're right of course. The class system is so entrenched in British society and culture, that there is no alternative.

Other reforms are available and anyway let's face it, Presidents come from the same stock. The ultimate check and balance should come from a well informed, engaged public perhaps. Edit....the general point is really that it is only ever presented as an either or thing which only occurred to me this morning. [Post edited 11 Sep 2022 9:13]

You’re right it’s usually presented as either or. But I don’t think an anarchistic utopia would be the result of a third way.

Who knows.....clearly the overriding narrative is that we are not to be trusted.

I don’t think that’s wrong though! I don’t think there is much wrong with the “system” we have so much as the way people are taught or not taught to interrogate it and understand it. We *could* feed clothe house and provide energy to everyone regardless of what constitution we have.

Why do we have to have a head of state? on 09:56 - Sep 11 with 2318 views | Guthrum | It doesn't have to be. In the USA, the flag is symbolically the Head of State, not the President. Which is why there are so many laws about how it must be handled (including no being made into items of clothing, which everyone ignores). Of course, in a theocracy, the deity is Head of State. In North Korea, it is a long-deceased former leader. But humans generally like there to be some sort of symbolic focus for the nation.

Oh good there you are. Had no idea about the flag thing...how bizarre. I suspect however that humans are essentially told what they "like" by those that know best. Watching the stories and narratives that we are currently being fed only confirms this view.

A good start would be to stop handing out ancient feudal titles such as "Lord" and "Sir". Upper chamber reform is a more complex subject, but whatever we do with that, we don't need to give members of the upper chamber silly feudal titles.

I can't think of any nation state which has existed withous some kind of symbolic, real or personified focus at the centre. Even the Spanish Republic of 1931-39 (which included sizeable anarchist elements) had an elected Head of State. At a basic level, committes without someone in the chair tend to be mess. Someone has to set structures, impose time limits upon discussion and summarise decisions. Otherwise it's just waffle with no consensus.

Would they be titles now given to people for reasons? Don't get me wrong, hereditary titles should be long since abandoned. [Post edited 11 Sep 2022 10:24]

We need a Head of State. They are an important check & balance in our governance, especially as our FPTP electoral system can often create a form of elected dictatorship. However, I am all in favour of an elected Head of State & we could easily have a system similar to how the Irish elect their President. I want our President to be apolitical, so Rule 1 is that the President may not be a current of former member of either of the Houses of Parliament.

There is one huge advantage to a royal family over an elected head of state. An elected head of state wants to be there, and has his or her own agenda, as well as having to appeal to popular opinion to get the gig. At least the royals are effectively independent and not reliant on garnering votes or motivated by personal gain / power grabbing. There must be a better system than either though.

There will always be a political element to any elected position, but yes we need a Head of State separate to the existing parliamentary system. If not an unelected hereditary monarch, then an elected impartial head. Both come with built in problems, but nothing compared to allowing a ruling government to ignore longer term values. It is the only way to avoid the mess that is the US Supreme Court.

The US Supreme court is a joke, because judges should never be political appointments.

There is no reason to give titles to current citizens, beyond it being a useful and potentially corrupt way of keeping people or businesses on-side with the government or the establishment. If you think ordinary citizens should be honoured, fair enough, maybe you think they should be given a medal, but that potentially creates problems with honours then being removed from miscreants.

Its an honour in recognition of achievement or service. No obvious harm in that.
