Selecting players to put them in the shop window 11:24 - Oct 13 with 1641 viewsGlasgowBlue

Listening to the BM pod with Phil and IpsRich and it was interesting to hear Ian Westlake talk about Ulrich Le Pen being selected for a UEFA Cup tie for the sole reason to let people see he could still play and to get him off the wage bill.

It got me thinking, has this ever been happened before or since in a competitive match at this club?

Not competitive matches, but times when players being pushed out of club go on pre season tour at expense of youngsters just to keep them fit enough to sell when no intention of ever using them.

Sure been times in early league cup games when players on way out have had a game for only reason to get them out

Kayden Jackson? Obviously a move never materialised but he got a few sub appearances and EFL Cup games in Autumn 2021 even after Cook had made it clear he wasn’t in the picture.

Off-topic but similarish. Didn’t we play a 16yo in a EFL trophy match because we wanted him to sign a new contract? Think Kieron Dyer thought that other younger players were more deserving of a call-up. Forgotten who the player was.

Yes, Chiwera away at Colchester last season (may have even been the season before actually).

Yeah you're thinking of when Chirewa came out of the blue to play Colchester (as a sub). Not sure if that was definitely the reason but certainly seemed like it.

I'm sure it has happened regularly, particularly in games like the early stages of the League Cup ahead of the August deadline, players fielded to remind people they're still about when the current manager has no intention of using them otherwise.

Similar has happened before with players getting early call-ups into the squad, not just to make them sign contracts but to try to ensure we got more cash if they were poached before they'd signed a deal, Byron Lawrence being an example.

From what I remember, Lambert happened to watch a bit of U18s training the day before, TC happened to impress during that time and as a result got picked for the squad the next day. I know a few eyebrows were raised at the time.

Good to know Lambert put as much thought into that decision as he did pretty much everything else.

While we're on topic, it seems to be accepted knowledge that the opportunity to sign TC up longer term has been and gone, and you can't really blame him if bigger clubs are interested. Is that how it is or might there be hope?

Not expecting him to stay beyond the end of his contract. West Ham have been interested for ages, so may well end up there.

Would have been Autumn 2019 before Covid.

We managed to book a space in the official CUFC car park, and as luck would have it, we were virtually next to the away exit.

While it was painful on the way in, after the game, we were out and away and back in Ipswich less than 30 minutes after the final whistle .... a world record for returning to Ipswich after an away game!

Shame, did think if that wasn't the case we might have seen more of him in EFL Trophy games this season.
