The Ruskies VERY likely shot down an airliner killing nearly 300 and well over 200 EU citizens and nothing (scary for us) happened in response. Obviously a major diplomatic incident, but I’d be very surprised to see any serious repercussions. A few behind enemy lines takedowns of these missile launchers wouldn’t hurt though.

Not very likely - they did shoot it down. My money was on incompetence on their part and I suspect a repeat this time - but it’s not good enough or relevant. They have committed another act of aggression against another sovereign state.

One theory is that the Ukrainians shot the missile down, and the wreckage landed in Poland. I have no idea if that is true, but it is difficult to see why Russia would want to take this huge escalatory accion.

The Ruskies seem intent on demonstrating their incompetence and inefficiency at every turn. I wouldn't be surprised at some NATO hawks thinking 'it's gotta be worth a go'. As the rest of their military machine is so useless, the assumption that their nukes aren't up to much is probably a reasonable one. But still not a risk worth taking.

Ditto when he annexed Crimea and we all happily turned up to his World Cup and Winter Olympics parties. We liked Putin a bit too much.

Well they didn’t poison people in Salisbury either, did they. The two people caught in camera from the airport and back were on a day trip to see the famous spire. Jeez. It doesn’t matter whether it’s incompetence or not. They’re pushing their luck. [Post edited 15 Nov 2022 21:18]

They targeted Lviv with the biggest blanket bombing of the war. Lviv is near to where the missiles landed. It seems that there were other missiles that landed in Poland but no-one killed. There are already a whole load of NATO heads in Bali at G20 and you have to expect them to be having a meeting.

"it is difficult to see why Russia would want to take this huge escalatory accion." The likelihood is that it was an inaccurate shot. This would fit with the narrative that poorly trained and poorly equipped Russians are using out-dated equipment. However, Putin also knows the West is not going to risk being drawn into a major conflict over an incident like this. It would be an easy way for them to say "we will do what we want and what are you going to do about it?" A year ago, I am sure many would have said "it is difficult to see why Russia would want to take this huge escalatory accion." over a potential invasion of Ukraine.
