The guardian's story on terrorists plotting on 10:19 - Dec 7 with 2402 views | Swansea_Blue | Mental indeed. AfD are Farage's buddies. The AfD MP quoted there was in post at the time he was attending their rallies a few years ago and whipping up their support.

The guardian's story on terrorists plotting on 10:24 - Dec 7 with 2389 views | Guthrum | Not just a couple of loons, some of the Reichsburger groups have hundreds of adherents, including, alarmingly, members of military special forces. They also have a history of stockpiling weapons. Many of them are very right wing and even neo-nazi/antisemitic. All part of the same broad scene as the Sovreign Citizens in the US and those claiming the Magna Carta frees them from laws and taxes in this country. Extreme individualist libertarians who deny responsibility to the state while living within its support and protection. With a very selective, not to say peculiar, interpretation of history and law.

If 25 have been arrested, it makes you wonder how many are left and what they'll do now. You mentioning the international links makes we wonder if there's been any coordination.

The fact that some of them are/were active members of the military is quite concerning. Obvious that they intended to use violence to try to achieve their aims.

Whats intriguing me is that more information seems to be very slow in coming out.

The vast majority of these people are fairly harmless oddballs. Many more keen on proclaiming themselves supreme leader (Fuhrer, King, Emperor, whatever) and gathering followers than actually trying to sieze power. Also these groups are extremely fragmentary, constantly splitting apart and feuding with each other. A few, however, are dangerous fanatics capable of organising and carrying out violent acts. These are the ones now targeted by the German authorities. Most of those attracted to these ideas feel themselves to be socially and economically excluded in what they perceive to be rapidly changing world becoming unfriendly to an in-group they self-identify with (e.g. white, working class, male). They hearken back to a mythical glorious past in which they fantasise themselves achieving prominence as Germanic warrior chieftains, tough frontiersmen or ruthless SS leaders. Coordination is far too strong a word. There is certainly cross-pollination of ideas and provision of moral support. Maybe individual instances of direct visits and/or provision of funding. But are they capable of concerted international unrest? Not on anything more than the smallest scale. Which we have seen before with occasional murders, such as that of Walter Lubke or those by the "National Socialist Underground".

Yes, some of them are outright fascists. Others nazis, similar but distinct. Still others monarchists, wishing to resurrect the German Empire of 1871-1919. Most just want to be big and important without the trouble of working through mainstream politics. Or are simply cranks.

Echoes of the militia groups here in the States. Mostly confused hate-filled individuals who like to cosplay as pretend soldiers, fighting for freedoms they already have. Largely harmless but usually a few in the groups willing to take it dangerously far.

The main point really is that it's Tucker Carlson with his large audience on Fox driving a lot of this narrative both within the Republican Party and outside it. The other sources are the kind of thing Paz and CIL used to regurgitate on here, nonsense but with a far more limited reach.

Imagine being so low in the whole 'destabilise the West with propaganda' setup that you get landed with this place. Not only is the reach of this place far less than say, Facebook, but Phil is much better at weeding out and banning these people than Zuckerberg. [Post edited 7 Dec 2022 14:17]

Weren't "Massive Fannies Of Nudge" a thrash metal band in the 1980s?
