The problem is our shape 11:59 - Dec 30 with 2649 viewsitfc_bucks

For all our talent in the squad, we are rigidly adhering to the same shape, even when we make substitutions.

We need to move things around a bit and maybe look at a more orthodox style of 433 or possibly even a 442.

Possession is great, but we need to be more creative than we are being.

Agree

I still firmly believe in the games when teams sit deep, we need Ahadme alongside Ladapo. getting balls floated into the box

We scored 2 goals last night.

Our vulnerability at the back is the concern here.

It's not. If your happy to say we scored 2 goals so there isn't a problem then you also have to acknowledge we conceded a class freekick. So in effect we conceded 1 goal from play which isn't bad away from home against pompy.

We have a weakness defending far post balls on our left because Davis isn’t the tallest. He was never going to win that header against Raggett. Given everything else that he brings Im not sure that a change in formation is justified. We had enough of the ball to have scored the extra goal that we needed.

Ragett would have out jumped anyone at that point, he had the natural run and jump option to him against a defender moving backwards.

What we need to do more as KM said Is stop the crosses going in.. to many times we allow balls into the box. Its got to stop. Donacien and burns have to do better on that side.

Two of the goals against Charlton came from the other side, headed back across from the right?

It's clearly a vulnerability in the system we play

Just play 4-2-3-1, its the formation that suits this squad best.

Problem solved.

KVY Woolf Burgess Leif
Evans Morsy
Burns Chaplin Harness
Ladapo

Whoa there Nellie!
You're dropping JD?
Big call that.

We have played it on the odd occasion?

It's a bit more of a teenties formation, it was cutting edge about 5 - 10 years ago but things have moved on with the ball playing centre backs and overlapping centre backs etc?

We’ve been playing that basic formation virtually all season.

In play it’s not symmetrical, as we push Davis on more than JD, so it looks like a back 3 sometimes, but it’s essentially a 4231

It's a bit more flexible, evolving depending on the phase of play

The 2 number 10's are a bit more unusual, compared to your floating 10

It allows the wing backs to make the pitch wider I guess

This is incorrect on so many levels. Oppo managers say repeatedly that the variations that we deploy in our shape is very difficult to plan for, or play against.

I'd agree that's pretty much how we set up but if you look at the average position of each player (the SofaScore app lets you see this quite easily) for most of the games it ends being pretty much a 2 4-4 ! Both JD and Davis spend so much time in advanced positions at the halfway line.

Did anyone notice yesterday tho how deep morsy dropped for the ball.

Alot of the first half he was next to wolfy and Burgess. Never seen him drop so deep.

Indeed, it's asymmetrical, JD as somewhere between a right centre-half and right-back. Burns has tended to start more advanced this season than last as more winger than wing-back, but JD certainly hasn't been a right-sided equivalent of Leif Davis.

It was interesting to hear someone say they'd matched our three at the back the other day, so the system is viewed that way by some opposition managers.

Allows the full backs to push on when in possession, one at a time, back four becomes a back three. Just think it'd suit our personnel.

Exactly, although not so much of late.

Suits us best, although I'd drop JD and encourage both full backs to almost becoming overlapping wingers at times.
