To be fair our attack looked much better, but flimsy defence. Scotland just had that determined will to win. Just like Ipswich we play some great stuff but can not or will not do the dogged stuff that gets you over the line.

I can't understand why anyone is surprised. Teams, whatever sport, have their highs and lows. Always have done always will have. It's England's turn in the rugby.
The problem is England have relatively underachieved for quite a long time.
I think they have something like double the number of rugby players of the rest of the 6 Nations combined, they have the most professional league probably in the world and they have outstanding players, but more often than not they don't produce the goods when it really matters.
I don't really know the reason, but England really should beat Scotland every time, given Scotland only has two professional clubs.

RFU seem very distracted by their determination to implement, without any consultation whatsoever, a new rule re the community (not pro) game restricting tackles to waist height or lower - according to an interesting docu on BBC R5l 'Sportsdesk' at 5am today (not yet available on Sounds).
