I know the answer but won’t spoil it. My grand parents lived a few miles from Chequers and my grand father told me the story.

No, I had to look it up. But not surprised by the answer, given Macmillan's views on social conscience - derived in part from what he witnesses during the Great Depression.

MacMillan would be utterly appalled at the state of the 21st century Tory party. His brand of one nation conservatism was pretty much destroyed by Johnson in 2019 when he booted out the likes of David Gauke, Rory Stewart, Ken Clarke, Dominic Grieve and 17 others.

This is evidence of the post-war social democratic consensus that lasted until 1979.

I know these people are so-called One Nation Tories, but they all went along with austerity which is about as un-One Nation a policy as I can think of, and not something I am sure MacMillan would have supported. But they were all decent human beings, not something I can say of many still left in the Tory party.

Interestingly, I bumped into Greg Clark just before the last election when he was out canvassing in my mother's street. He was one of the Tory MPs threatened with expulsion but who in the end toed the line.

I asked him how he could stand for a party which expelled the people you mentioned merely for having a different view to Johnson. He couldn't really answer, but he seemed to agree with my observation that at least he had put up some sort of a fight, as opposed to Tom (I was in the army) Tugendhat, a supposed One Nation Tory, who always keeps his head down, which is not something one would expect of a military man.
