Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

FWIW I'd say our current squad is good enough to be better than Birmingham, Cardiff, Huddersfield, QPR & Rotherham. Probably on par with Bristol City, Hull & Plymouth.

Big summer ahead.

We’re gonna need a separate ‘running before we can walk’ filter.

Not wrong. I think we're a bottom end scale mid table Championship side right about now - no better than 14th/15th.

I see too much talk of the Burnley game as a reference for how we'd do and I think basing a viewpoint off an one off game in a cup competition isn't realistic despite us playing well that day.

We're better than Sunderland were last year who have just made the play offs. League is looking harder next season though, but think we're at least top half as it stands before we make additions.

Would Plymouth not be in the bottom group for quality today, maybe at the bottom? Five important loans returned and Mayor released.

We played them twice. I take your point though, but that and the Rotherham game suggested that there isn't a massive gulf between where we are at currently and much of the Championship. The games I've seen this season it looks a pretty mediocre league, lots of sides look jaded, no real investment and some pretty average players playing for them. I'd back the current squad to finish top half, think with the inevitable strengthening we can push on and challenge next season.

I was hearing recently that West Brom are in serious financial trouble. I don't expect them to be too much of a threat next season

It’s always has been a very competitive league - the standard stays mostly the same despite people saying that it’ll be harder next season.

Top half finish is the aim I’d imagine…

But we’ve no idea who we lose/add as yet… come august 5th we could be saying top 6 is the aim

We’ll be good again... one day

That's my thought too. Some teams will do better than expected, some will do worse than expected and some will be utterly predictable.

I think if we can bring the same well-oiled, slick and drilled performances from our last few months to the Championship, then I think we will give the best teams a run for their money. For me, our challenge will be adapting and evolving when teams figure us out because they will. I trust McKenna to get that right based on how he learned in League One, but this is going to be much tougher.

Sunderland have some good ball carriers in their team, although their best player is about to return back to United.

They finished the season strong and the league table was quite tight for the last couple of months. A couple of teams like Blackburn and Norwich will be wondering how they didn't make the play offs given the position they found themselves in for most of it.

Some very experienced teams at that level in there, we will be doing well if in top half. Surprise and momentum may be our best weapon! Go at teams with no fear as we have been doing, At least till we're found out at Christmas, then a good window, a storming Feb/ March/ April and a top 6 finish!

Yeah I'd agree with you there actually. They've also released a couple who were key too. I think they'll be in the bottom 6 next season but their home form will be key to staying up.

West Brom won't be the only club in financial trouble either - Norwich, Birmingham, Cardiff, Stoke will be similar whilst clubs like Plymouth and Rotherham will be working on low budgets. I'll be keeping an eye out on most of the Championship teams over the summer.

Swansea could lose Russell Martin to Southampton - would make Swansea less of a threat, although they could replace well. Cardiff seem like they'll be all over the shop. Can Millwall, Blackburn and Preston go again to push for top 6?

I feel like there's a tendency to look at the size of the club and assume they're decent, rather than the level they're playing at if you've watched a bit of Championship football. I dare say most people wouldn't have backed Luton or Coventry to be contesting the playoff final but the reality is a lot of those clubs you naturally assume are strong, aren't in reality right now. Cardiff for example are absolutely dog sh1t, I was staggered how bad they are and I wouldn't back them to get out of L1 if they were in it. There will certainly be 10 or so sides in the division that will likely be strong though, not least the 3 coming down, 3 missing out through the p/offs and the likes of West Brom, Watford if they get their act together, Swansea are decent too.
