New supernova detected 09:26 - May 23 with 1669 views | StokieBlue | One for anyone interested in space, the closest supernova for 5 years (although close is relative) was spotted over the weekend in M101 (the Pinwheel galaxy). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinwheel_Galaxy Unfortunately it's not visible to the naked eye (unlike something like Betelgeuse which would cast shadows when it finally explodes) but it can be seen with a good enough telescope setup. I managed to get a picture of it over the weekend, not a patch on the NASA image of course but reasonable for light polluted London. The supernova is shown in the red box. SB

Thanks, hard to get anything much better here even with many hours of data. I'll try and clean it up a bit at some point though as think I can get a clearer image. Article on the supernova along with an image that shows what you get with a 10bn USD space telescope. https://www.space.com/supernova-closest-earth-m101-galaxy Gif from the article showing the before and after: SB

That's nothing short of breathtaking when you think about what it means. The scale is also a bit mind blowing when you think about when it actually happened: - this occurred c. 5 million years before Afro-Arabia collided with Eurasia creating the Gomphotherium land bridge (i.e. when the Mediterranean and Indian Oceans were split apart allowing species like elephants to first migrate from Africa into Asia). - it was during the period when Apes first evolved - at this time, the Himalayas were going through a major period of formation - Facters passed his driving test And we're only seeing it now 🤯

Fascinating stuff. Will they name it champagne I wonder?
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |
