Chelmsford City vs Ipswich Town (1973) 13:45 - Jun 7 with 4554 viewsMiaow

I had a great find last week at the charity shop in Braintree where I volunteer.

There was a paper bag with some old football programmes inside, most of them Chelmsford but also a few Colchester United ones. Mostly from the ‘70s.

The largest item within the bag was a newspaper folded in two that just so happened to be from 16th January 1973 - a copy of the Newsman Herald (I hadn’t previously heard of it) priced at 3p from three days after our FA Cup third round match at Chelmsford that season. It covers the game and the other goings on from that day... the front page leads with “The Battle of New Writtle Street” and “if this is soccer you can keep it”, and there are a number of pictures inside of the disorder outside the ground. Also a number of good photographs of the game inside as well as a couple of colour images.

After checking through the others bits in the bag, I came across the programme from that day (10p) which had been looked after well, and found a ticket stub (50p) from the game inside the programme.

We won 3-1 (Harper, Johnson, Hamilton), with Chelmsford scoring a late consolation. Whoever had the match programme marked down the score and scorers and noted that Peddelty came in for Beattie. The Ipswich team was: Best (GK), Mills, Harper, Morris, Hunter, Peddelty, Hamilton, Viljoen, Johnson, Whymark and Lambert.

Chelmsford were in the Southern League and we ended the season in 4th in the First Division.

Many years before I was born but were there many on here who were there that day?

(I shall have to try and take a few photos and share them on here) - EDIT: Pictures posted below:

The only "disorder I remember from that game was afterwards when, presumably unused to larger crowds.they omitted to open the proper gates so that quite a few, myself and future wife included, climbed over the turnstiles to get out of the ground and the crush.

There was plenty of disorder before the game as the Town's finest decided to kick the gaggle of Chelmsford diehards out of their own end. There was also trouble after the game - generally the kicking & punching variety, but also a ransacking of Woolworths. A rare chance for Town's hard men to find a group of fans to whom they could give a good kicking.
However, not all the Chelmsford fans were saints. A lad called Terry Bugg was beaten up, but at a Chelmsford home game next season he was arrested & charged with threatening behaviour or such like.

As someone comments below those photos, what a record of the times - the denim, the sheepskin, the scarves, the boots, the Beattie-style hair and sideburns, the police raincoats, the dinky (police) cars, the streets wide because of the lack of parked cars...

I posted the goals from this game back in November. Sadly looks like it got a copyright strike, that or the channel did.

Pity, youtube was on a roll with old Ipswich content I hadn't seen.

I was there and quite a few West Ham fans turned out for trouble as they did at the FA Cup replay we had against Leyton Orient. Happy days!

Thanks for posting. I was there as a 13 year old with my dad, and vaguely remember trampled cars after the game.

I was staying with my Nan and grandad at the time in Chelmsford. They were WHU fans and used to take me to loads of games. I also was WHU at the time as I didn’t move to Suffolk until 76 I think.

My Nan was moaning about Ipswich fans and how lucky we were to support a good family club like WHU 😂

What an amazingly long report from the great Bernard Webber, a man I read a lot of during my childhood.

This was my second away game - my first was at Wolves. My dad took me, I was 11 at the time so don't remember it particularly well, but I was there!

We missed all of that so I wonder how widespread it really was?
