FM geeks 17:54 - Jun 28 with 3426 views | Hipsterectomy | Did you see the news that FM24 will be the 'last' version of the current iteration? FM25 is to use a whole new Unity engine as well as incorporate women's football fully. Guess I'll need to upgrade my macbook to run it

Honestly probably a good idea from their point of view, custom game engines have gone out of fashion as the industry has matured and outside of the very biggest names everyone basically uses Unity or Unreal. Look forward to seeing what they do, it does need a refresh. The match engine seems pretty stale these days and reading the blog you get the feeling they are struggling to make changes.

CM01/02 is free to play now and there's a dedicated community that still updates it.

Not sure i'm ever going to move away from 2D classic view so i'm not particularly bothered.

FM geeks on 01:08 - Jun 29 with 2664 views | wkj | I have alpha tested for SI for a number of years. Nothing has been said officially but the feeling is they may be moving towards a "Game as a service" Model where you get regular updates but have to pay for season passes every year. Changing the engine to Unity supports this theory as it has the tools to better facilitate 'GaaS'.

Season passes for the database updates? Or season passes for changes to the game?

Hopefully not season passes within the game :) that might be prohibitive to replicating my epic 20 year Mansfield save where I won them the Champions league. I really should have a statue up there.

It will surely be an opt-in thing. Keep the version/database you're on unless you choose not to. Imagine if you could keep going woth your fm14 save but the game upgrades to the newest fm24 features. Could be good.

They've said as part of FM24 they'll be making the saves backwards compatible so you can keep long saves going which is massive. I think the game-as-a-service model probably works for FM. Instead of doing big bang releases every year you essentially just pay for Football Manager and they incrementally release changes as and when they are ready. Most people either now have it on Xbox Game Pass or will buy it every year.

CM 01/02 was the best. I remember getting a tool for it where you could "tweak" the player stats. I won so much stuff with Ipswich Town! Champions League 5 times in a row, premiership countless times, FA Cup, League Cup, everything. Got a bit boring though, winning games 6 or 7-0 all the time :/

My favourite thing was always hunting the regens down. Christian Vieri was always a doddle to find as you needed to look for someone who was Australian and Italian.

The database editor was useful also for looking for youngsters with high potential so you knew they would turn out to be good players and get them recruited when they were young and cheap.

It's hard to say with something like FM, as its not a live game in the same way that Destiny 2 is. However, I would imagine there would be a mix of game changes both via free and paid for updates. It seems like a yearly "expansion" dlc would happen with the database and updated rules, asset changes and things like that. This is all assumption. Though this is all assumption at this stage and SI have said nothing directly that confirms or hints about it happening. [Post edited 29 Jun 2023 11:44]

I’m not sure how that would go down with the hardcore followers of the series. I’ve been playing since 94/95 and I would seriously consider if I would continue purchasing going forward it would very much depend on how it works. [Post edited 29 Jun 2023 22:40]

I actually think this is the kind of game where season passes could work better with live development of the core engine and database. As long as the customer isn't price gouged. In many ways FM has always been like this with yearly releases anyway - a few years of minor changes then suddenly a big one. For as many units as SI sell per year (with the core reason people buy it being that the DB is up to date), I do know they don't have the "premium" options that a lot of games run. Not saying that they should, but any 'AAA' game dev that isn't considering ways to add add optional extras are financially falling behind the pack. However, for the player - this could be problematic for sure.

We will see. It very much sounds like they are limited in what they can do with the current set up, so this might be a good thing.
