Do players' wages automatically increase on promotion? I would have thought its a specific clause requested when a player joins and may vary from player to player.

The norm for players on promotion is to seek contract extension (with renewed clauses and increase pay in line with club stature and potential).
Clever clubs will look to secure player signatures if they know they will promote to avoid potential free transfers following promotion etc. |  |

I think its pretty standard for promotion and relegation clauses to be in contracts now.
Do you remember when we got relegated from the premiership and no one had a relegation clause and consequently no reduction in wages. Sheepy said at the time that this wasn't a thing and if he had written one in that no one would have signed it.
I always felt that the players could have maybe voluntarily taken one to save us from administration but of course in reality that was unlikely to happen. |  |

No, unless they have a contractual agreement, which is on a case by case basis. Most players get a promotion bonus, only some would have a guaranteed pay rise.
Clubs will want to see whether the player is able to step up to the new level and will only want to offer better terms to those that are able to successfully bridge the gap. [Post edited 14 Jul 2023 10:09]

Like all other clauses it is dependent on whether it’s in their contract or not. Which is why most players have agents. |  | | |
