Subs worked against us when it went 2-1 19:44 - Aug 6 with 2578 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Harness and Hutchinson couldn’t keep the ball at all. I’d have brought Ball on earlier. Donacian I’m not sure about at this level tbh, weak link. Lucky to hold on being that deep to some extent. That said, I thought the CBs really done well and put everyone on the line. We do need some additions still. Chaplin nearly goal of the season in the first game 23/24, stonewall penalty after. Although Sunderland had a shout for one first half. Now all the good stuff. Luongo my MOTD. Morsy was great. Keeper shaky first half, great save at the death. We will have less of the ball in the championship, so we are going be extremely dangerous going forward. We saw it with goals at Bolton and Derby etc last year. So dangerous on the break with attackers than can finish. Love everything about the Hirst goal. Would have taken a point before kick off, great result. Off out for drinks! [Post edited 6 Aug 2023 19:45]

Subs worked against us when it went 2-1 on 19:48 - Aug 6 with 2524 views | pointofblue | I was willing for Ball to come on for Burns from about the 80th minute. Solidfy the middle. He probably should have come on instead of one of Harness or Hutchinson when we made those changes, but that's in hindsight. I wasn't as impressed by the midfield as others. Sunderland broke through far too often, particularly when down to ten. We had no control whatsoever and, again, that's why Ball was needed. Going forward they had impressive moments and I thought Morsy was unfortunate to be booked. The Hirst goal in particular was gorgeous play and Broadhead is going to be a key player this season.

Unfortunately for our CM pairing they were penned in because it wasn’t sticking to anyone else around them. They did well to get out of some tight situations. A very tough test.

Not sure how the Sunderland midfield rank when it comes to the division. I do think we're going to have to consider a centre three at points this season.

Looked like we needed a 3rd body in there for long periods today.

Subs worked against us when it went 2-1 on 20:10 - Aug 6 with 2296 views | Illinoisblue | Agreed. Ours subs hindered rather than helped us. Credit to Sunderland for some of that but we should have retained the ball much better… and if Freddie had squared to Ball we could have relaxed. But let’s be clear: GREAT WIN.

Great win, just need some better depth. Don’t think Harness and Doncien will cut it if they have to play extended periods in the Championship. Fantastic result though.
Subs worked against us when it went 2-1 on 20:25 - Aug 6 with 2180 views | GavTWTD | I thought Harness did ok especially defensively. Hutchinson could have been better with ball retention. Feels like a perfect day really. We got a win but there's a lot to work on for the coaches to get their teeth into. Definitely no complacency.

It was mainly out wide where they were having joy rather than in the middle of the park.

Subs worked against us when it went 2-1 on 20:45 - Aug 6 with 2030 views | BloomBlue | I thought JD had an excellent game today. He was up against one of the best players (Clarke) in the Championship last season and until he had his head nearly taken off his shoulders he had dealt with him

Not for me. Should have been a pen against him, where did their goal come from? Sold players short on the ball and misplaced headers as well. This level is a bit of a step up for him unfortunately, a few others as well. We are going to need to strengthen the depth in a few areas to compete at the higher end of the championship.

Agreed, and I don't think for that game that he was a downgrade on Clarke.

I think it was an 86th minute goal, and 13 minutes of extra time, that counted against us more because it fired up both the crowd and the Sunderland players.

JD did OK def could have been a penalty. As for the goal not sure now if it was after injury but JD skipped along side the bloke who crossed for tackle awful defending. So for me did OK no more Thought Burgess was superb he has come on leaps and bounds under McKenna most improved player at club the level he arrived here at.
Subs worked against us when it went 2-1 on 08:30 - Aug 8 with 1393 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | I thought JD was excellent. The Sunderland fans i walked back to my car with were in agreement as well. Arguably the most dangerous winger in the league was limited to no real chances

Subs worked against us when it went 2-1 on 08:46 - Aug 8 with 1319 views | OldFart71 | I think you just have to look at Nigeria v England to see that quite often playing against ten women or in Town's case men your spare man has nobody to mark and ends up like a spare pr*ck in a thunderstorm.
Subs worked against us when it went 2-1 on 08:59 - Aug 8 with 1273 views | Nthsuffolkblue | I think you also have to take into account the changes that Sunderland made. They started off very inexperienced and brought on more experienced players. It was disappointing to struggle to keep the ball in the early stages and once they were down to ten men. It was encouraging that we were able to limit their scoring chances throughout.

I thought JD was excellent. As was Hladky. Sunderland's fans only got behind them after the goal and I saw loads leaving the ground early who turned around and came back in when the 13 minutes extra was announced! Had their fans been as good as their team first half, it could have been a different story. I was a bit disappointed with Freddie when he came on. He made a couple of poor decisions, and seemed a bit more of a goal hanger than an all-round threat like our other strikers. Luongo was great at times, but needs to pass earlier. Morsy was terrific after a little bit of a shaky start. Broadhead and Hirst were being pulled and fouled all game and got nothing from the ref, but they kept going without complaining and got their rewards. Hirst's goal eh? Couldn't wait to watch it again when I got home. Leif was outstanding, especially going forward and the centre backs coped well under pressure. Towards the end of the first half I thought we would be fortunate to go in level at half-time, but we were the better team overall and fully deserved the win. Home in Lowestoft at 1.00 am.
