That was like pulling teeth. Young person, still yet to be confident in front of a camera. Interviewer doing him no favours. Could have turned many of those closed questions into open ones. Pretty basic stuff.

That's one thing that really bugs me about so many sports journalists nowadays! No one actually seems to ask sportspeople questions, they just seem to make a statement and then shove the microphone in the person's face, it makes for uncomfortable viewing sometimes and would drive me crazy if I was the one being interviewed.

One example sticks in the memory for some reason... Gary Richardson interviewing Andy Murray literally the moment after he'd walked off court having lost at Wimbledon a few years back. Made ridiculous, vacuous statements like "you must be feeling down after that" and "that didn't go to plan". Painful stuff and people wonder why Murray has a history of histrionics with the meeja. It's really poor stuff from professional journalists who get paid pretty well and should be doing much better. I guess on the flip side, it's a ridiculous time to interview sports people, right after a match, whatever the sport.

Think DS clearly not overly confident (or doesn't particularly enjoy) speaking to the media which is fine, it's not in everyone's skillset and isn't a requirement to be a pro footballer. Was obviously just trying to get to the end of his answer as quickly as he could and even when Andy Warren was giving him opportunities to expand on things and add more detail he just repeated himself or gave a very short response. Certainly don't think the interviewer did anything wrong.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

It was an awful interview. Thought it yesterday when l watched it. I cringed at it and can’t bring myself to look at it again.

These days, it pretty much is a requirement. Can cut a teenager some slack, though.

I like Andy Warren but I thought he was very dry in that. He could smile a bit more and try and make it more a friendly chat. Talk about kieron from spurs. Theres a balance but it needs to be more relaxed.

Garry Richardson normally comes across as a laid-back and witty person on the Today Programme but there was a time when he presented a sports interview programme on Five Live and was deliberately provocative and rude to his guests.

He must have been asked to act like this to make the programme more edgy, but I found it rather unpleasant to listen to.

Well yes it comes with the territory but you won't be prevented from getting a pro contract if you're uncomfortable speaking to the media which was my point. Agree always think it's a bit harsh when people criticise young sportspeople for giving fairly bland or awkward interviews.

I sensed he was a bit nervous. I suppose he's not used to doing interviews in front of a camera in such a glossy studio, where slickness is supposed to be everything.

Yes, I wouldn’t read too much into it. Public speaking, interviews are not for everyone. It’s quite a skill and something that even people who’ve been trained don’t always do so well.

Lets see what he does on the pitch..... I remember Broadhead looked like a shy little boy in his first interview..

I just don’t get these in depth 6 mins interviews being the done thing.

Some players are great in front of the camera. Chaplin, Luongo out of this current crop are really good. Loads of players are shy I’m sure and aren’t comfortable in those positions. Just a quick one minute hello and welcome type or even in writing is surely better

The problem with a new offering, like Town TV, is that they have produce this type of stuff to justify the subscription and maintain the interest.

But apart from Town in 5 (and that wasn't produced for the Leeds game), I am not interested in any of the fluff (including interviews) the club produces, so have no intention of subscribing.

Totally agree there, all the so called interviewers do now is make a leading statement and expect the interviewee to agree. No real answer required.
