I imagine this is just political posturing, and will never see the light of day, but the suggestion of broadening the definition of extremism to include anyone who “undermines” the country’s institutions and its values could end up with all Conservative MPs and ministers of the last 13 years in the dock. And let's not forget that nice Mr Clegg, a supporter of the austerity that has led to public services on the brink of collapse.

I'm mose concerned that it will lead to journalists and opposition politicians being maliciously prosecuted for ill-defined "crimes against the state".

Ha.... that was exactly my first thought when I saw the headline. Life sentences for the whole dang lot of them from Thatcher onwards.

I think it’s time to use the f word.

We seem to be seeing authoritarianism on the rise domestically and internationally. Along with the religious/ethnic/cultural nationalism that fuels it.

Seems dangerous to me, you could speak out about the elected government and be regarded as an extremist.

Sue Ellen Braverman, on the other hand, is hopeful that that it will lead to journalists and opposition politicians being maliciously prosecuted for ill-defined "crimes against the state".

No surprise to see Gove is behind this, the snivelling little sh*tweasel.

Although that explains a lot, I still think that's a harsh way to describe Frimmers.

Perhaps the most chilling aspect of the Guardian article is that it states that the Muslim Council of Britain would be captured by the new definition of extremism.

This is clear evidence of the increasing Islamophobia in government (and in society more generally) which Baroness Warsi has spoken about, and which Braverman (with Goan Christian and presumably Indian Hindu heritage) appears keen to promote, as do many in the right wing circles people like her inhabit.

Sue Ellen is a Buddhist. She took her oath of allegiance as an MP on the Buddhist Dhammapada.

I know that, but I don't think that detracts from the point I am making (namely that she has no link to Islam), although it is interesting to note that she doesn't appear to me to show any evidence of the enlightenment that underlies Buddhism. After all, the term Buddha means the Awakened One or the Enlightened One.

I don't think it is anything to do with her own personal beliefs. She is pandering to an element of the electorate. She would deport her own parents to Rwanda if they arrived here now.

wonder what she believes she was reincarnated from? given her perceived hatred towards humanity, i'd go for wasp

but wasps can have a useful impact on the ecosystem, so that's maybe unfair on them...

It is difficult to read the following and not think there is Islamophobia at play, whatever other nastiness underlies her actions, especially as the article that follows indicates there is no basis for what she said.

"On 2 April, when outlining government measures to tackle grooming gangs, Braverman singled out British-Pakistani men as a major source of concern.

She described a “predominance of certain ethnic groups – and I say British-Pakistani males – who hold cultural values totally at odds with British values, who see women in a demeaned and illegitimate way and pursue an outdated and frankly heinous approach in terms of the way they behave.”

Braverman has used inflammatory language when referring to asylum seekers and criminal gangs, claiming “British-Pakistani men are members of criminal grooming gangs abusing white British girls”.

you're probably right, but whether the driving force is entrenched islamophobia or desperate naked populism is unclear.

can't believe i thought theresa may was the worst home secretary ever; her 2 main successors make her look like some kind of incredibly competent saint...

Probably from an Ebola virus.

Must have been the actual Ebola virus responsible for the original infection that led to the outbreak in West Africa, in order for it to have done enough wrong to be reincarnated as Suella Braverman.
