Well worth a read for subscribers. This bit stood out for me on an Ipswich focused point:

As part of Ipswich’s sales pitch to convince Hutchinson to sign, McKenna showed him a video detailing how he could become “outstanding” out of possession if he made the move. And so it has proved.

“The coach watched me when I was with Chelsea Under-21s and saw that I could be good at pressing,” Hutchinson says. “But I didn’t really do it as much as I should. He said, ‘I’m going to need that from you if you are going to play for me in the Championship’.

'As Hutchinson runs off, the crowd rise to applaud him. That ovation provides a snapshot of how well the loanee has fitted in at Portman Road.'

I love Omari, but I think we were mostly applauding/cheering for the return of Burns from injury no?

It was for Omari as he ran/walked off, and then when Burns ran on there was more cheering and clapping.

Really interesting read and yet another example of McKenna's outstanding coaching ability.

One thing that bothered me about the article though:

"The now 20-year-old was actually released twice by Chelsea as a kid, then played at Charlton Athletic, an EFL club in south east London"

Have Charlton really fallen so far from grace that somebody reading an article about a Championship player needs reminding of who Charlton are?

Get that The Athletic has a global audience, but a Prem team in the not-so-distant past should be known by most readers.

Kieran mentioned this after the Southampton game. Also he was asked a fair bit about OH on Saturday.

McKenna: We Need to Enjoy Nights Like Tonight 19th Sep 2023 23:15
Town boss Kieran McKenna says everyone connected with the club should enjoy nights like this evening’s 1-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s, the Saints having been a Premier League side last season while the Blues were in League One. 16

McKenna: It Shouldn't Have Been 3-2 11th Nov 2023 18:52
Boss Kieran McKenna admitted his frustration at the way his side ended their 3-2 home victory over 10-man Swansea and felt the Blues ought to have scored more goals but overall took plenty of positives from the game. 18

Watching them against Cray Valley, yes Charlton have fallen that far.

I’ve been to the Valley many times over the years. In about 2003 a work colleague and ST holder had a spare ticket and invited me along to see them play against Aston V in the PL. At one point, his chums/seat neighbours asked me who I followed. The sneering laughter went beyond banter. They also found taking us to the cleaners for some of our players hilarious.

The common view was very much ‘oh well, we’ll never have to play rubbish like you ever again’, the only limiting factor to their progress being Curbishley. They wanted better to take them to the next level

I have never forgotten that evening or forgiven. I should let it go after 20 years, but nope. A plague upon their B&Q stadium. I watched the Cray V games looking at whether they had anyone worth taking for nothing. There wasn’t.

Bit of both for me.

Short answer is yes, they haven’t been in the PL for coming on 20 years so why would an audience outside of the UK have much awareness of them

Someone has also made a really good point in the comments that it’s entirely normal for articles on clubs in other countries to describe them in similar ways - and often appreciated as why would the average English football fan know the geography of Girona, for example

That 2003 reaction seems a bit over the top when, just two years previously, in front of reportedly their biggest crowd for 25 years, they'd found themselves 0-2 down to us inside 5 minutes. Sadly though, that was also the game when our mini-revival hit the buffers, leading on to relegation and long decline.

Watching them at the weekend, and last night, until they got their act together, did bring back memories of our halcyon days and nights against such as Barrow, Lincoln etc

I was at that game. They should have had somebody sent off at 2-0 too. So disappointing, especially as we were in the Charlton end keeping it down.

Yes their reaction in 2003/4 was OTT but they were a weird rather arrogant bunch by then. Not now.
